Manufacturer's Description

Got wifi? Love music? Fed up with terrestrial radio and disappointed with digital?

The KitSound Surfer is the future.

This shiny black box of tricks is packed with more features than an over-budget TV show. Plug it in, follow the very clear and simple instructions to hook up to your wireless router, and you will be bequeathed nearly fifteen thousand radio stations.

You would be hard pressed to find a radio station not broadcasting on the internet these days so take your pick. Rock, pop, trance, D&B, breaks, jazz, classical, blues, bluegrass, gypsy polka, ska, funk, reggae, metal, grime, dubstep, thrash, punk, skiffle and all the rest…

Some radio stations are only broadcasting on the internet. If you have a favourite artist you will probably even be able to find a station playing nothing but that artist. The search function allows you to search by genre, country or by specific word. You can locate and play podcasts from all over the world directly from the Surfer.

The KitSound Surfer has a built-in alarm clock so why not wake up with some old school hip hop fresh out of Philly’ or how about some gabba to ease you into the day? Kick back in the evening with some blues straight out of New Orleans or get your dance on with some salsa from Mexico or Cuba. Check out the feel-good vibes on the stations in the West Indies or get moshing with some mental metal from Munich.

The Surfer has a high quality speaker driver and amp giving you a really great sound.

The Surfer will locate other computers on your network and play the MP3/WMA files stored on them with ease.

The Surfer has an audio in jack allowing you to connect your iPod/generic MP3 player/other audio source.

The Surfer has an audio out jack which allows you to either listen on headphones or hook it up to your Hi-FI.

The Surfer also has an FM radio so if you just want to listen to Radio 1 for a change you can. (Although all BBC stations broadcast on the internet too!)

The Surfer does not make tea but it will make tea time more musical.

You do not even need to have your PC switched on, the Surfer stands alone like a renegade squid with 15,000 tiny tentacles sprawled over the internet sucking up radio stations and spewing them into your ears.

Sound Fact:

In a room with 100% soundproofing you will hear your heart beating and the blood rushing though your veins.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
A Very easy to use radio, which can be used in Various modes, standard FM, or connect to the internet and pick up radio via your broadband connection, or alternatively attach your ipod though a connecting cable is not provided.

I started with the Internet radio, connection was easy and the instructions made this a fairly intuitive affair, once you have your WAP Router Key in the radio. The choice of stations is surprisingly large and you can choose by genre or the standard stations for your geographical region.

The selection knob is almost ipod in its ease of use, turn and push to select each menu item.

There is a date and time setting which happened automatically the first time I connected to the web, and favourite stations can be preset very easily.

While being sceptical to start off with about the quality of internet radio this is actually rapidly becoming the favourite way of listening to the radio at home.

This can also be used as an alarm clock again this is quite intuitive to set.

A little expensive but very well built and quite intuitive to use, I highly recommend this radio.

The future of radio? 24 May 2010
By G. E. Harrison TOP 500 REVIEWER
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I'd never heard of `Kitsound' before but this "Surfer" internet radio is very attractive and seems very well made and solid - on a par with my Pure Evoke Dab radio. Although it is readily portable so you can use it throughout the house, it does have a pleasing weight to it (2.6 Kg) so it doesn't move when you push the buttons.

It has a shiny black finish with silver trim, a blue 4-line display window, a large scroll knob, a volume knob and 9 smaller function buttons including four presets, power, mode, info, menu and back buttons. Although all these controls functioned OK, the volume and scroll buttons didn't feel very solid and my volume control isn't properly centered and rubs against the case when it is turned. There is one speaker, which works well with surprisingly good bass - again on a par with my Pure radio - but don't plan on using it for music for a party, at 5 watts it just won't be loud enough. (Although I have linked mine up to my hi-fi via the headphone socket which produces a much better sound but defeats the portability advantage.) Connectivity is limited to a headphone socket and a line-in/auxiliary socket, both of which are on the back of the unit, which annoyingly require you to turn the unit round to make the connections. Also on the back of the unit is a bass port, which means that you can't really put the radio up against a wall etc, and a very short FM aerial - FM reception is OK but I haven't really used it much (why would you?!?)

Unlike some products these days this one does come with a printed manual, which is clearly laid out and while succinct is also straightforward and easy to understand. As a complete newcomer to internet radio using the instructions I was able to register on the wi-fi radio portal, create an account and input my favourite stations. Before I wouldn't necessarily sit in front of my computer to listen to internet radio, however now I can listen while I am doing other things in the garage, kitchen etc. I'm still getting to grips with exactly what internet radio stations are available but as a northerner living in the south I have already used it to listen to football and rugby league commentaries, I am exploring some of the local and generic radio stations in the States and I've used it to listen to my first podcast. I had also expected to use the radio to play music from my MP3 player via the `aux in mode' but in fact it just seems easier to play my much larger collection of MP3 tracks straight from my computer via the radio, which works brilliantly. I haven't used the alarm clock function but I would think that the display is far too bright to leave on in the bedroom.

All in all a very good radio, which as DAB radio stations continue to disappear must be the future. However, I feel that I need to learn a lot more about internet radio to get the most from this piece of kit.

A blast from the past 28 Jun 2010
By Mr. David C. Halliday TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
There was a time when the radio was a households main source of entertainment. News, shows & music were all available only through the wireless unless you were well heeled.
This great device brings the technology full circle as it seamlessly blends the latest technologies while retaining the warmth, charm & sheer enjoyment of the old radio's. All that's missing is the glow of the valves!
The combination of traditional and new is felt straight out of the box. This is finished in piano black with a clear white on blue dot matrix display yet the single speaker with black metal grille, dials & buttons all lend a 'classic' feel.
It comes fitted with an alarm, the ability to connect to your computer & play your MP3 files wirelessly and can be hooked up to your hifi and takes headphones via a 3.5mm jack.
It also has FM if you so desire which is a nice, if a little unnecessary, addition.
Set-up takes very little time, effort or knowledge, (just as well in my case!),.Once up and running the first reaction can be one of being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stations available. To help you can select genre, country or specific words. After a while though, having flicked about all over the planet trying to find the most obscure islands radio stations or weird genre's, you get used to it all and find yourself able to pinpoint those stations that suit you best. I found an excellent west coast station operating from a lighthouse that plays soulful tracks, a Hong Kong station that plays endless 1980's with virtually no repeats and a station in the Caribbean so full of beans that after an hour you feel exhausted. Once bored then it's back to the dial and off you go again.
There is some rubbish out there but frankly anyone stuck with FM knows the pain of local stations endlessly playing the same 10 tracks for 2 months or the inane chatter and drivel offered on the talk stations. The web stations often carry little or no advertising, (although some odd products/ services can bring a laugh), and often are run by dedicated fans, (and sometimes nutters), who really know their stuff.
The tuning is a doddle and the display easily read and very bright. The single 5 watt speaker may seem basic but in use is actually musical and clear with plenty of volume and some nice weight. Nothing tinny here.
All in all I love this. It may seem vital but if you love radio, need some company at night, are fed up with the terrestrial stations or even your own music collection then this is a great idea that is easy to use and provides a near endless collection of artists & genres. There really is something for everyone and it's delivered in a great and easy to use package.
Highly recommended.
