This is a lovely and inspiring cookbook by Lucy Boyd, daughter of Rose Gray (who co-founded the River Café, and who was Jamie Oliver's first employer!). So she grew up with great cooking - the book begins with little Lucy eating her first oyster.... Boyd is today the head gardener at Petersham Nurseries where she worked in close collaboration with another great chef, Skye Gyngell, trying to make sure the garden was well-stocked with unusual Italian chards and borlotti beans (amongst many other things...).

Going to Petersham is a real treat - I've never actually eaten there but the kitchen garden is to drool over. Beautiful neat beds, fantastic tomatoes on the vine, the sweetest baby potatoes, high brick walls... So in that sense I was prepared to be converted just by loving her gardening :-)

But the whole book is actually very, very seductive. You may find yourself, as I did, veering between extreme jealousy (at the photos of verandah lunches in Italy) feeling terribly sorry for Boyd (at the loss of her mum) and curiosity (please immediately tell me where I can buy seeds of those delicious-looking tomatoes).

If you are the kind of cook who is going to be naffed off you can't buy some of these ingredients (purslane, sea kale, langoustine) in the local supermarket, the book may not be for you. But if you are the kind of person who enjoys the challenge of tracking down heritage varieties, who likes to taste one orange variety and then another, who prefers one jar of capers to another, then please do consider this book.

I found the sense of particularity about food really inspiring - the specification of a particular kind of ham, or tomato, or aubergine, so that the flavours work together exactly right.

Fantastic book, full of beautifully written recipes that will be the 'Kitchen Memories' of the next generation.
The 'Ugly Biscuits' are a favorite in our household.
Real food that you can confidently cook at home and impress your friends with!

Lucy Boyd captures the joy of savouring and cooking food in a way which is leaves you wanting to cook recipe after recipe. Her recipes use wholesome, healthy, colourful, tasty and fabulous foods, which many will quite possibly grow in their own gardens. If not, many readers will be inspired to create their own kitchen garden.
Uncomplicated, this delightful book is not just a recipe book! It's a wonderful stroll through Lucy's childhood, time spent in Italy, and her joy of learning to cook seasonal foods and creating dishes which are neither difficult nor technically challenging! Understandably endorsed by Jamie Oliver, I very much hope more of Lucy's recipes are on the way in a 2nd book! Thoroughly recommend.
