Book Description

23 May 2012
Back in 2009, the kitchen table was where Rosie French and Ellie Grace began sharing their food experiments with the world through their blog Salad Club. The popularity of the blog prompted the two to found a supper club in Ellie's flat just above Brixton market. For each session, 30 complete strangers would come together to enjoy three or four course meals for a donation. Kitchen & Co. conveys the informal, improvisational character of Salad Club. Its 100 recipes illustrate the authors' culinary adventurousness, which is built on a shared love for sourcing fresh produce from their local market, as well as unusual ingredients from ethnic supermarkets, wholefood shops and independent suppliers. The book is divided into the four seasons, with many recipes created around fresh seasonal ingredients. Think Gin and Juniper Pork with Leek and Parmesan-Stuffed Squash for winter; Oeufs en Cocotte in Spring; Grilled Lamb Chops and Salad Club Mezze for Summer, Warm Barley, Almond and Pomegranate Tabbouleh and a Flourless Chocolate, Prune and Brandy Cake for an Autumn birthday.

The Sunday Telegraph (book of the week)

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, delicious, effective. 5 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
I was so pleased when I spotted these girls had done a book, because I've followed their blog for a while and always loved the seasonal recipes. This book doesn't disappoint; recipes cover everything from comforting soups and risottos to more impressive dishes to cook for friends. It's beautifully laid out and the tone is warm and involving. I really did feel like I was cooking from a friend's recipe book, and it's perfect for lazy weekends when you want to cook something simple and filling. A book for providing a bit of inspiration when you've regular ingredients, and one that recognises not everyone wants to do complicated or difficult. Lovely. Can't recommend it enough.

It is very rare - actually a first in fact - that I can turn the pages of a cookery book and want to cook every single dish. This absolutely stunning book, styled to perfection, is an absolute must for anyone stepping foot inside a kitchen. The tone makes you feel like you are learning from a friend, with little amusing asides and suggestions that create the impression that there are three of you cooking together in the kitchen. The recipes are easy to follow yet produce sophisticated results. I don't want to compare to other cookery books because this is a unique style but it has the simplicity of Jamie yet with a showering of sparkle and just so much taste. I have never had so many compliments about my cooking. I also enjoy their emphasis on sourcing local and fresh produce, it's a gentle reminder for me to think about food in the context of community and the environment. Practically it is well thought out too, as it has a page holder flap on the front and back cover - very useful when jumping between recipes. It even feels luxurious, the pages are soft and velvety to touch. I'm pretty sure my cooking ability has improved over the past few weeks of reading Kitchen & Co too. So I suggest to anyone interested in cooking or not, buy this book, read it over breakfast each day and let French & Grace inspire your culinary talents to new heights.

5.0 out of 5 stars inspired! 29 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was given a copy as a gift and have been seduced by the lovely recipes. Even MY fussy family acknowledge that the resulting meals are "really nice, thanks!" and plates are handed back clean every time. We particularly love the chicken with allspice and accompaniment of fragrant basmati rice.
Beautiful, mouthwatering photos illustrate the recipes, which are arranged seasonally, (although I use all the recipes all the time). Some dishes are light and simple, others are hearty and warming, but none of the dishes featured require obscure or complicated ingredients and yet somehow the flavour combinations are distinct and exciting. This book has certainly shaken up my kitchen and I am still buying copies to share the love with favourite friends. Well done Misses French and Grace!
