As long as it has the larger type connection instead of the newer tiny ones. I have an older iPod Classic in mine

There are two types one with the old 30 pin type connection and one with lightning connection(small) make sure you order the correct version the one I oredered was for the lightning connection for an iPhone5 yours will be the same.

Yes, however you will have to choose the unit with the 30pin connector. The old iPod classics don't have the lightning connectors.

If it's all connected right and it's playing music on the phone and the volumes up but still no sound you may have a fault on the dock itself?

I thought they had stopped making this! I tried to replace when mine died but it was no longer available, To my best recollection you do need to remove case from iPod as it sits snugly back on the holder,
