Introducing the KitSound Jive

With its rounded edges, speaker grille and extendable aerial, the retro design of our DAB / FM radio is a tribute to rock and roll music.

Retro Design

Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed may have coined the term 'rock and roll' in 1951, but the whole ethos of the genre only gained mass appeal when Elvis Presley released what was to be the first of his 170 hit songs 'Heartbreak Hotel' five years later. If it weren't for the likes of Elvis, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry giving young people a sense of identity and freedom by bringing rock and roll to the juke boxes of those 1950s diners, music today would sound completely different. In honour of that innovative era, our KS Jive not only looks the part, but it sounds good too.

More Music

Not only can you listen to regular FM radio stations, but because the Jive is a DAB radio, you can also listen to digital stations, giving you a wider choice of channels and more music. Because of the way DAB technology works, broadcasters can transmit more stations than ever before. So whether you want old school disco, 70s glam rock or classic pop anthems, with the KS Jive you can tune into a variety of different music 24 hours a day.

Better Sound, Easy to Use

Because it picks up a digital broadcast signal, there's less hiss, crackle and fade, meaning music will sound even better, and what's more you don't need to worry about remembering wavelengths and frequencies or fine tuning a station to get the best reception - simply choose name of the station from the Jive's easy-to-read digital display, which will even give the track titles and artist names too. So there'll be no more frantic Internet searches, trying to find out the name of that amazing track you just heard.

Other Features

As well as also having an adjustable carry handle, the KS Jive features a multi-function control panel with a sleep/snooze option, quick scan button and you have the option to connect it to the mains or use batteries. Go on, get those Elvis moves out while you're making the dinner. No one's watching.

I have been debating the move to DAB from FM for some time now, following concerns I started hearing amongst my friends that FM had "run out of channels". It was a shame as most of my equipment at home is FM and it has a lot of history for me in terms of listening, but we live in the 21st century and we need to move with the times.

I actually bought this with some money I received for my birthday as I had read some good reviews. I've also bought KitSound in the past, and to be honest, I have been quite impressed. I was hoping that this would not disappoint either.

So if you are aiming to future proof and maintain/exceed the level of output quality that you currently receive from your radios, then you should take a serious look at the Jive. And hey - if you just can't stand the thought of letting go of FM just yet, then note that it has the ability to flick between both modes.

Fair size front-firing twin drivers give some respectable volume at the top end. The packaging states that the drivers are 3 inch and each driver delivers 2 Watts, with a frequency response between 100 Hz - 8 kHz. Obviously some stations will give you crackle due to lack of reception and you can't blame the drivers for this, but when I found a really clear local station on DAB the sound was really impressive. For general listening I have to keep the volume around 65-70% otherwise I'd start losing my reputation has a "considerate neighbour... But for a DAB radio? Nice to have the option to go louder for gatherings, parties, and the like.

The design is very retro, putting it back in the era exactly as the packaging described. The unit feels very durable with good build quality, and the sleek black leather finish makes it feel like it would be at home as part of a merc's car interior.

My Mum got a Roberts Revival radio for Christmas and I absolutely love it. I was so impressed by the sound and design of the radio; I looked to get one myself, and then discovered the accompanying price tag, which seems to be anywhere between £160 - £200 and so my search stopped there.

However, I started searching "retro portable radios" on Amazon and came across the KitSound Jive. Available in a number of colours I was firstly drawn to the price and secondly to the brand. It has been a while since I have purchased any KitSound gear, but knowing the speakers I have owned previously have always been a hit, I thought I'd give it a go... And at half the price of the higher-end Roberts', the specification looked good and if anything, I preferred the rounder, softer shape.

So, I decided to buy the Jive in black. The product arrived in good time and the first impression of the product, from the packaging, was a positive one. The packaging has a very 1950s feel with the pin-up style girl and Buddy Holly inspired man all in black and white.

The design of the Jive is brilliant. It is a decent size, has a handle for portability and little feet that mean the radio does not move around. The front grill looks really retro and the quality overall seems really high. The finish reminds me of fake leather with a plastic finish on the top for the screen and tuning / volume knobs.

On turning on the radio, I was a little worried that I'd have to start tuning it and so I reached for the instructions; however, I plugged the radio in, turned it on and "voila!" the blue screen came on and music started playing. I quickly scanned through to find my favourite channel (Kiss); whacked up the volume and proceeded to dance around my room like a mad woman!

I decided to buy this based on pretty much looks alone! It looks so cool and retro, better than the Roberts in my opinion. The all black leather and grille finish looks great, I'm glad I went for it (was considering cream). The only things that aren't black are the KS logo and a nice bezel around the edge of the radio.

When the radio arrived and I played with it for a couple of days, I was surprised at how modern and functional the technology is. Everyone knows about DAB now so I won't go into detail on that, but I will say it picks up all the National and Local services and offers pretty strong reception compared to other portables I've owned. Easy one button scan/autotune. It also has FM reception if that's still your cup of tea.

Sound is very loud if you want it to be, but it's pretty true and the base is excellent for a small unit. Craig Charles Funk and Soul show sounds fantastic on it, this radio does a great job of getting the most out of the DAB signal which some complain doesn't carry sound as well as FM - so well I couldn't notice the difference.

As a clock radio it's pretty cool, has 2 alarms which is handy! Usual sleep/snooze functions etc... Didn't realise when I bought it but this thing runs off batteries too, so it'll be getting a lot of use in the garden in the summer!

All in all I'm well chuffed. A great product with retro flair for half the price the other so called "retro" radios sell for.

I bought this after looking at the orla kiely pure radio, which was a bit pricy for me! I also noticed that the vinyl did not wear well on the demo model I saw in a well-known large store! The jive appeared on my amazon search, and I was intrigued by the great reviews, and the great price, too - around a third of the pure. It came really quickly from the seller, and is a lovely bit of kit - looks cool, sounds great, and is really easy to program and operate. I have previously owned a Roberts revival which was terrible in every way - poor sound and reception, and the vinyl ripped with only minimal handling. This is a different beast - the cover is shiny and feels much tougher, good news with a 4 year old around! I love it and feel it represents awesome value. Would make a superb gift!
