Product Description

Product Description

Kit car building is buoyant in both the UK and US, and increasing numbers of enthusiasts are attracted by the prospect of driving a tailor-made car that they have built themselves. The vast range of designs available ensures that there is a vehicle to suit all tastes, from replica sports cars to specialist track-day machines. This book, extensively updated to include the latest developments on the scene, including the now common use of motorcycle engines, is written in a humorous, down-to-earth style and provides all the information required to choose a suitable kit and complete it successfully to produce a safe, roadworthy car.

About the Author

Iain Ayre is a well-known kit car enthusiast, and a regular contributor to a number of kit car magazines in the UK and US. He has extensive practical experience, and is currently working on a Cobra replica based on running gear from a common US police car design! He lives in Canada.

I bought this for my dad for Christmas and he was well impressed with it as he is currently building his own kit car in his spare time...it hasn't left the bathroom since!!...Good sized book packed with information.

First impressions are this is not as good as I thought it was going to be. Being a Haynes product I expected a good fact-based book with diagrams and advise, but instead it is mainly long waffley blocks of text full of the author's personal opinions.

Although some useful experiences are shared, I find his constant moaning about the production car industry, associated depreciation and running costs very irritating. Just because all his vehicles are kit-cars doesn't mean every reader is going to abandon their normal vehicles.

For him to moan about production sports cars is bizarre and totally irrelevant. I, like many, still aspire to own a Porsche one day and am not going to give that dream up just because in the meantime I am thinking about building my own kit sports car for under £10k.

The sections of text about getting 'the wife' on board by doing DIY for her is as uninteresting as it is insulting to mine and my partner's intelligence.

In summary buy this book if you want to learn about the author's experiences and how amazing his wife is, but you'll find much better advise and build information on the internet.

Kit car 20 Jun 2009

Written in a good style, even makes the wife to laugh. The book is almost a perfect way to choose between different kits. Some popular kits are missing (eg. different NG, Moss, Merlin types). It would be nice to include it in the third edition. The appendix with the addresses of manufacturers and clubs is very useful.
