Product Description

Album Description

This is the second disc from Albion Records which is part of the Vaughan Williams Society.

The disc again boasts the talents of Iain Burnside, Roderick Williams, Sarah Fox and Andrew Staples.

This second disc 'Kissing Her Hair', is a collection of early Vaughan Williams songs. One, Rondel, from which the title is gained, is unpublished and unrecorded; it is serenely beautiful and is as it was written when the composer was only 22. It will change perceptions of the quality of music Vaughan Williams was composing at this early age. This CD is being released in February 2008 to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of the composer.

Albion will then turn its attention to the unrecorded piano transcriptions of Vaughan Williams, for release later in 2008.

Personnel:
Sara Fox - (soprano), Andrew Staples - (tenor), Roderick Williams - (baritone), Iain Burnside - (piano)

Much about this disc is a delight - just the simple stylishness of RVW's writing is a joy. All of the singers are very fine and totally inside the idiom as is the pianist Ian Burnside. But why oh why does Roderick Williams like to put on a dreadful dreadful coy faux-innocent Yokelshire/Mummerset 'accent' for the pseudo-folk songs. It is ghastly. It is the musical equivalent of french chansons sung in the style of Inspector Closeau or Italian opera by Al Capone. Williams is a great singer with a perfect voice for this repertoire but he has form for doing this aberrant singing style - from memory (I threw the disc away I hated it so much)he does the same on a Naxos disc of Butterworth songs. I am at a loss why those around him, the producer, even himself doesn't listen back and decide it sounds beyond naff. The defence is that the poet/author of Linden Lea (William Barnes) wrote the original in a Dorset dialect. Be that as it may this is an art song in the style of a folksong and sung like this it becomes simply arch. For those who think this is authentic it may be a revelation for me it is nominal academic rigour getting in the way of fine music making.
