Although it's slipping down the list now, this was Number 1 in the bedtime charts for a long time for my lad - and it still gets a regular outing as he approaches his third birthday.
It's a beautifully illustrated tale of a grumpy bear being cajoled into finally giving his dad a kiss good night. Since there's no big bear kiss for daddy, daddy suggests a range of alternative animal kisses - baby crocodiles give their daddies snappy watery kisses, he tells the wee one as he gives him his bath - as baby bear gets ready for bed.
It's the drawing which really sets this book apart. Each of the animals Daddy Bear mentions can be found on the page, if you look hard enough. e.g. As they climb the stairs to bed, and dad suggests a giraffe kiss, the shadow of the two of them forms the outline of a giraffe on the wall.
Added to this, the opportunity for actions lead to great engagement from your wee one (it's your call whether it's your child or his/her teddy bear who gets an upside-down bat kiss!).
I can definitely recommend this to anyone (especially fathers) who wants a gentle story to put a smile on their child's face as they go to bed.
