Product Description

Three years ago, Morgan Bailey narrowly survived a vampire attack that left her with heightened senses, uncanny speed, and a new calling: supernatural bounty hunter. Since that day, sexy, street-smart Morgan hasn’t met a vampire she couldn’t dust or a demon she couldn’t kill—until she’s hired to hunt down a priceless amulet and the sunwalker who stole it. Sunwalkers—powerful vampires immune to sunlight—are notoriously difficult to find, let alone kill. Still, a job’s a job, and Morgan’s never been one to shy away from a challenge. So bring it on…right?

But the sunwalker ends up tracking her down. And not only that, he turns out to be cunning, charming—and undeniably gorgeous. Nevertheless, she can’t ignore the destruction he is capable of: the sunwalker possesses an ancient secret which, if unleashed, could destroy the human world. Captivating and fantastical, Kissed by Darkness introduces a kick-ass new heroine and an addictive new series for fans of urban fantasy.

About the Author

Shéa MacLeod spent most of her life in Portland, Oregon, before moving to an Edwardian townhouse in London located just a stone’s throw from a local cemetery. Such a unique locale probably explains a lot about her penchant for urban fantasy post-apocalyptic sci-fi paranormal romances, but at least the neighbors are quiet. Alas, the dearth of good donuts in London drove back across the pond to the land of her birth. She is the author of the Sunwalker Saga and Dragon Wars series.

More About the Author

Shéa MacLeod is the author of urban fantasy post-apocalyptic scifi paranormal romances with a twist of steampunk. She has dreamed of writing novels since before she could hold a crayon. She blames her mother.

After a six year sojourn in London, England, a dearth of good donuts has driven her back to her hometown. She now resides in the leafy green hills outside Portland, Oregon where she indulges in her fondness for strong coffee, Ancient Aliens reruns, lemon curd, and dragons.

Because everything's better with dragons.

Shéa is the author of the fast paced urban fantasy series the Sunwalker Saga (KISSED BY DARKNESS, KISSED BY FIRE, and KISSED BY SMOKE)which is available now on Amazon from Montlake Romance. 2.0 out of 5 stars Sunwalker Saga book 1 15 Nov 2012
By Sarah (Feeling Fictional) TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Since surviving a vampire attack several years ago Morgan has developed some new abilities that make her a perfect vampire hunter. Now working for her friends PI firm she spends her time killing vampires and demons to keep the human population safe and unaware of the danger surrounding them. Her latest case is to track down and kill a Sunwalker but everyone knows that they are just a myth though so it's going to be a pretty impossible job. Well Morgan always thought that Sunwalkers were a myth but she's about to discover how little she really knows about the supernatural and the more she uncovers the greater the danger she must face.

I love urban fantasy so I'm always excited when I come across a new series to try, particularly one where the first few books are already available because it means I won't have to wait a whole year to find out what happens next. So when I saw Kissed by Darkness on the Amazon Vine list I jumped at the chance to review it. Unfortunately if I had to describe the book in just one word the only one I can think of is disappointing. I had such high hopes but although there are signs that this could develop into an interesting series it didn't manage to impress me.

I'll start with the things that I did like and the main one was the history the author has created for the vampires. With links to the Knights Templar and the lost city of Atlantis the author has come up with something a bit different which I always appreciate. I still have questions about the world but that is something to be expected when you're reading the first book in a series. I also quite liked Jack, he doesn't particularly stand out as different to many other heroes I've read about but there is definitely potential for a crush worthy male lead there.

Part Buffy, part Anita Blake, part Marion Zimmer Bradley, this is a hyperactive story with an irritating heroine/narrator. Morgan - of course - has survived a vampire attack, has super-powers, is lusted over by every man she meets though is terminally single, oh and now she's entangled with a Templar Knight and an amulet from Atlantis...

This frequently feels like it's written by a breathless 16 year old who really needs to get her hormones under control. The pace is breakneck, and the writing fairly simplistic (`velvet' mouth, `velvet' lips, `velvet' skin, kisses like (you guessed it) `velvet').

The secret to this kind of commercial genre fiction is great characters who we can love (Sookie Stackhouse, Rose Hathaway) and a palpable chemistry in the romance - but both elements are missing here. This just duplicates all the conventions and clichés of paranormal romance adding nothing of its own.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really did not like 11 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Now from the blurb I thought this book would be right up my street however I have to say it really wasn't. I must admit that I didn't finish the book I read about 30% before admitting defeat. Morgan Bailey just annoyed me way too much. Morgan is meant to be a bad ass vampire hunter and the only reason I know this is because she constantly keeps telling us that she is a bad ass vampire hunter. There was no evidence to actually prove this seeing as she keeps getting attacked by vampires, one who she manages to shoot with her UV gun and the other who gets away. I was also annoyed by Morgan's hormones and how she kept telling us how much she fancied her friends cousin Inigo. I'm surprised Morgan could actually walk with the amount of thigh clenching she does. Then Morgan meets another vampire who once again gets her libido doing the happy dance, please just get laid already so I don't have to read about how long it is since you had sex and how his lips were made for sin. If it weren't for Morgan I would have probably liked this book. From what I read the plot seemed good and interesting but I just couldn't continue reading and I hate not finishing a book. I would like to say that this book has got lots of high scoring positive reviews and this is just my opinion, however it wasn't for me and I would like to give Kissed By Darkness 1 star.

3.0 out of 5 stars I feel like I've been here before... 2 Oct 2012

Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Morgan Bailey works at her best friend Kabita's PI firm, which specializes in hunting down things that go bump-in-the-night. Which is how she meets shady business man Brent Darroch. He says that he wants Morgan to find an old amulet, that he claims was stolen from his family twenty years ago. The good news is that he says he knows who has the amulet and that the man is actually here in town. The bad news? Jack, the supposed thief, is a sunwalker - a vampire who can walk in daylight.

Morgan feels that there is something off about Darroch, so doesn't want to take the case. However Darroch has friend's in high places, so Kabita's government connections are holding something over her head, meaning that she is pushing Morgan into going along with everything and to kill Jack.

What is Darroch up to? Why is everyone so keen to kill someone who hasn't harmed anyone? These are the questions that need answering, before Morgan can decide what to do.

***

If I had to review KISSED BY DARKNESS in one sentence, it would be; it is OK, but has a been-there-done-that feel to it. I could see all of the 'shocking twists' coming a mile off, so ended frustrated that it took the characters so long to catch up. In summary; I ended up a bit bored reading KISSED BY DARKNESS.

As it is the first book in a series there is a lot of background setting in Morgan's life to go through, so the story is slow to get going. The bogged down pace isn't helped by the cast of unmemorable characters, two of whom annoy me; the heroine [I've just had to reread the book's blurb to recall her name] whines about things being complicated, when it's her that it making things more complicated by not telling others important stuff. Another major annoyance is the 'romantic/sexy' angle.
