I have a love for the more realistic portrayal of space on-screen, some of my favourite movies include 'Solaris', 'Sunshine', '2001', 'Moon' and the excellent BBC TV docudrama series 'Space Odyssey - Voyage to The Planets' which this new series is based on.

A lot of people will not have heard of 'Defying Gravity', because of poor marketing and advertising by ABC in the US and the BBC over here and being shown at various different timeslots on different nights of the week, I myself missed a few episodes because of these changes! I find this extremely bizarre as it was co-produced by the BBC themselves but they treated the show as if they weren't that bothered with it!? I'm so pleased that the series has been released on DVD, albeit on Region 1, but it probably won't ever be released on Region 2!

The show basically follows a group of astronauts as they undergo a six year space mission through the Solar System, starting by visiting Venus. However this just serves as the backdrop, it's the well-defined characters that make the show really work. The space environment starts to have profound effects on the crew both physically and mentally and we discover, through flashbacks, that not all of them are as psychologically stable as they should be. Add to this a mysterious alien force on board the ship and it creates some great on-screen drama and story-telling, with philosophical and psychological meanderings.

The show was criticized for being too sci-fi for non sci-fi fans and not sci-fi enough for the hardcore sci-fi fans, sitting somewhere in between! I consider myself a hardcore sci-fi fan and I never found this to be the case at all and I watched it with my girlfriend, who isn't a sci-fi fan at all, and we both found aspects of the show that we really enjoyed.

I am very disappointed that this series was not allowed to progress. I really enjoyed watching it though I missed a couple when the programming went screwy. I decided to buy myself the series as a small reward and even though I know it will never progress I will still enjoy watching it again. Decent programmes are rare these days and if you like sci-fi mixed with relationships you will also enjoy watching this.

I am a little torn on this one as I did enjoy the more Earth-centric based SciFi of Defying Gravity (DG) which was more character driven than plot driven. It was an interesting contrast to Stargate Universe which i have to admit is also pretty good series from the Stargate stable.

But, i sort of can understand why this didnt get the audiences as its not the traditional SciFi of Trek/ Stargate etc, though they did develop story arcs and ongoing plots they were pretty much a one hour self-contained story which DG isnt. I think the mix of crew interaction and the amorphous alien blobs perhaps didnt strike a chord with audiences either. Personally i enjoyed the rather more introspective human story with the backdrop of aliens and space travel.

Oh how I love Defying Gravity, I've watched it through at least 3 times. It's intelligent sci-fi set in the near future which might partly be what annoyed people as it looks and feels quite modern not futuristic. Personally this made it feel more plausible to me and the characters were brilliantly acted and developed.

Ok so the spaceship "live link" to mission control is impossible as they travel further from Earth but I didn't mind that being glossed over.

This isn't a show you can time in and out of, every episode needs to be seen in order for it to make sense. Such a massive shame it was cancelled but all the good shows are these days. I don't like Grey's Anatomy and this show is nothing like it so don't let the Grey's Anatomy in Space tag put you off!

I thought this series was genuinely thought provoking about where we are and what we're doing in the universe. I think it's a terrible shame that it didn't continue. It really rekindled my interest in sci-fi.
It had realistic human drama as well as plenty to please the more technically minded.

Too soft for science fiction lovers? Too much science for soap opera fans? Maybe too slow for the casual viewer. But certainly very, very
good drama.

In the near future, the space-craft Antares is setting off for a voyage across the solar system, to study the planets and tread new ground.
Eight astronauts with varying fears, regrets and secrets set off in the name of science, optimistic and hopeful. But as the first year of
their mission progresses, the men and women of the Antares are confronted with things they'd rather forget. (Admittedly, real astronauts
would never be admitted to fly with such varied psychological and emotional problems. But it is the focus of the plot, after all.) Is the
vast weight of empty space too much for them? Or is there a hidden agenda for the mission - something inside their minds?

The development of the plot is a little slow. But unless you are a dry, shrivelled cynic, the characters are likeable, believable, and
interesting.
The series was cancelled after only 13 episodes, and it goes without saying that there are plot points left unresolved, and secrets left
unsaid. What we do have is 13 episodes of original drama with an incredible, heartfelt climax. Invest the time and focus that this
incredible series deserves, and you will feel truly attached to these characters, and satisfied with time well spent.

As an added bonus, the music is very good, and the special effects are excellent.
Perfect for wanna-be astronauts, fans of realism, science, romance.
Buy it.
