Reviews

The writers of THE FIFTH ELEMENT, Luc Besson (who also directed the Bruce Willis film) and Robert Mark Kamen, have teamed up again to deliver Jet Li in the action thriller KISS OF THE DRAGON. Li stars as Liu Jiuan, a Chinese agent so dedicated to his job that he has no friends, no family, no dreams. He is sent to Paris to help the French police capture a Chinese gangster, but France's top cop, Jeanne-Pierre Richard (Tcheky Karyo), has set Liu up to take the fall for a brutal killing he himself carried out. On the run in a strange city, Liu keeps a low profile until he unwillingly becomes friends with an American hooker, Jessica (Bridget Fonda)--who just happens to hold the key to his innocence. But Richard is always one step ahead of them--he has Jessica's daughter. Li and Fonda make a great team; their relationship is at the core of the film, as neither character has ever been able to put his complete trust in another person before. The action scenes, directed by Corey Yuen, are fast and furious and very violent, featuring mesmerizing moves by Li, especially one involving a billiard ball. Chris Nahon, in his directorial debut, makes excellent use of the location, including numerous shots of famous Parisian landmarks as the bad cops try to machine-gun down Liu in the streets and sewers and on the Seine.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best of Jet Li's Recent Films 14 Sep 2004
By rp
Format:DVD
Wow! All the other reviewers have said just about everything there is to say about this film (some of there reviews must be longer than the film's script).
The action in this film is nicely filmed. Jet Li is stunning. Burt Kwok (star of the Pink Panther and Harry Hill) shows that he can be a very good serious actor. Fonda is spot on.
I'd rate this film above The Enforcer and The Black Mask, but below Once Upon a Time In China and Fist of Legend.
With a little more Kung Fu and a bit less gunplay it might have rivalled Jet Li's best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but Rough 20 April 2007
By Jay
Format:DVD
I expect most of these Hong Kong martial-arts films to be packed with action but most feature either a little humor (Jackie Chan) or beautiful scenery ("Hero," etc.) or wild special effects ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and more).....but this one features a mean edge. I'm not used to seeing these Asian films with a lot of profanity (mainly f-words) or bloody scenes almost to the point of being gross, which one scene was in here.

The hero is likable guy played by Jet Li. Despite his martial arts penchant for violence, he has a soft, boyish look to him and doesn't seem to fit the type. He's always the gentleman in here, with no profanity either. The villains, led by Tchecky Karyo, are brutal. Bridget Fonda, playing a hooker, at least wasn't some "Pretty Woman" type figure. She was rough, too, but at least realistic and I give her credit for not worrying about how she looked in here, beauty-wise.

I don't regret seeing this film. It was entertaining, but beware: it's a rough movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars More fun than you can shake a stick at 19 Aug 2002
Format:VHS Tape
The idea for the story for this film was thought up by Jet Li himself as well as Li putting in his bit for producing the film. But the real goodness of the film comes from Luc Besson and his screen play. This film is dark gritty and uses a wide range of camera and directing skills that the French seem to have a natural flare for doing well.
This film will bring a smile to anyones face. However i do advise that the ending is a bit over the top blood wise and drags on a bit. But its all part of a well rounded film.
