Review

'It's funny and original and an absolute delight to read aloud - a perfect bedtime read.' (THE PARENT'S GUIDE )

An ideal bedtime book ... This delightful tale is a true charmer ... Melling's witty illustrations are packed with imaginative detail, including the masterly touch of a delicate golden line tracing the swerling path of the kiss. (The Scotsman 20021207)

'Full of unexpected twists and turns The Kiss That Missed is a wonderful literary example of how to temper fearsome episdoes with humour. ... this story is one which will demand endless rereading.' (writeaway.org.uk 20021207)

Brightly attractive drawing and colouring are an irresistable invitation to enjoy The Kiss That Missed.

(School Librarian 20110701)

5.0 out of 5 stars The kiss may miss but the book scores a hit! 22 Dec 2004
By bobbathejobba VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This picture book tells the story of the King's bedtime kiss for the little prince that misses its intended recipient!

As the kiss heads out the window, the King's knight is sent to track it down through the dark woods encountering all sorts of beasties and a very big and hungry dragon.

Fortunately, the goodnight kiss sends the creatures to sleep, but when it goes up the nose of the dragon it has a rather unexpected result!

Simply wonderful, the illustrations captivate and the way sentences are left hanging over the turn of a page to introduce a pause before a surprise is brilliant.

The humour was spot on for my four year old daughter and it still remains fun depsite re-readings. The audio version (read superbly with great sound effects) remained in the car stereo for some weeks.

Suitable for at least three year's old and upwards.

If you like fun books, I also highly recommend:

"Hiccup. The Viking who was Seasick" by Cressida Cowell
"Spider!" by Bronze Smarties Book Award winner Lydia Monks
"Wolf Academy" by Jonathan Allen

5.0 out of 5 stars loved by my kids 16 Jan 2011
By JB
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book for my year 1 class as a story with a fantasy setting. It met all our expectations. The story has a simple theme that the children ( all 4 and 5 year olds) could relate to. They loved the idea that a kiss could roam the countryside changing lives. The discussions the story provoked were fantastic and allowed the children to use their imagination.
This story would also provide a gentle goodnight story for any young children.
All in all we loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just lovely 20 Sep 2010
By BlueSky
Format:Paperback
This is an utterly charming book with wonderful illustrations. The story is very simple but magical whilst the drawings are full of humour and beautifully drawn. I would say the book is ideal for children 3-6.

Personally I could read it over and over - so it's a good thing my children like it too!

Format:Paperback
My three year old loves this book about how love can change even an angry, hungry dragon's disposition! The illustrations are lovely and fun and the diction always makes my son giggle. It's got just the right combination of moral and magic - a classic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations 18 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
My son loves these stories, there is lots to look at in the illustrations and we see new things each time we read it. We used to rent this book from the library, but we had it out so often that I decided that it was time to add it to our own library. I was so glad that they have made this into an ebook, now we can take it everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A kiss that missed, but a book that hit!! 28 Feb 2012
By Ali Sid
Format:Paperback
I find it difficult to believe that this book has only twelve current reviews on Amazon. The story itself is simple and the message is too sweet for for words. Add that together with Melling's fantastic illustrations and here's a huge hit. My son (who is 'knight-crazy') adored the theme, and every night now (before bed) for the last two months we've sent kisses that either hit or miss. The page in the forest where the kids have to recognise the hidden creatures is so beautifully illustrated that I am in awe of this (new to me) author and illustrator. I regard books (and their authors) by the pleasure and learning my kid gets from them, so this one gets five full stars!
