3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Start 18 Aug. 2007
By KMont
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Gabrielle Maxwell is a successful photographer. After a phenomenal gallery show, she and her friends are celebrating at the hottest new Goth club in town. While everyone else is rocking the night along, Gabrielle feels something is wrong. When a fight breaks out, along with brooding stares from an intriguing stranger, she knows something is wrong. And when she sees something horrific in an ally outside the club, she knows her life will never be the same.

Lucan Thorne is a Breed vampire warrior and it's his duty to protect and keep his kind in line. The Rogues are getting more out of control though and their violence is beginning to leave too obvious an impact on not only his world, but that of the humans as well. When he spies an alluring woman across a crowded club, and witnesses her involvement in a grisly murder, he will have to find her and silence anything she knows. It may be too late for her though and Lucan's attraction is too strong to ignore. Too, when he discovers her true destiny, he has no choice but to bring her fully into his world...and into the war waiting there.

There is definitely a unique style to this first in Lara Adrian's vampire Midnight Breed series. It's an urban setting, which we're familiar with by now, but it's got its own atmosphere of dark foreboding twists and turns and she crafts it well through her particular use of language. World-building-wise, it's not doing too bad a job. Where it began to unravel were the main character's interactions, and it usually stemmed from Lucan's end. Tortured, angry heroes are almost always intriguing. It's thrilling to experience the redemption of their character and to see that wicked unraveling to the heroine's irresistible wiles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Start to a New Vampire Series 21 Oct. 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
After Gabrielle Maxwell witnesses a brutal attack by a pack of Rogue Vampires outside a nightclub, she is plunged into a war that most humans don't realize is happening. A war where Breed Warriors fight to keep the world safe from vampires who have succumbed to the lure of bloodlust and turned rogue. Little does she know, this is a world that has touched her before, and this time it's a world she won't be able to leave.

Lara Adrian's vampires are the progeny of aliens who crash landed on Earth centuries ago. The original aliens were voracious predators, eventually wiped out by their children. But something of the monster still lurks within, and the vampires fight against a bloodlust which if they give into, will see them marked for death by the Breed Warriors.

Kiss of Midnight introduces us to this world through the eyes of Gabrielle Maxwell and Lucan Thorne. Unbeknownst to Gabrielle she is a Breedmate - a human female genetically compatible with the Breed (all vampire children are male). Lucan Thorne is a Gen 1, (the first generation of alien children who rose up to kill their fathers) as such, he struggles harder against the bloodlust than his compatriots. But that doesn't stop him from being drawn to Gabrielle, even though he feels she would be better suited to a pairing with another vampire.

I really enjoyed this story. Maybe because I went into it with the expectation of being underwhelmed. Instead I was racing through it wanting to know what happened next. The plot moves along at a cracking pace, characters are well drawn and believable. And I ended this story happy I could move onto book 2 straight away.

Lara Adrian's world is well thought out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable... 21 Feb. 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
As a recent convert to the Laurell K Hamilton, Anita Blake series, I wanted to see if there was anything else out there that was as addictive and enjoyable. I have to say that I was unsure as to whether I would find anything that lived upto my expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

The whole premise of the vampires existing is totally different to Hamilton's, but this is a difference NOT a negative thing. Its just another way of approaching the long standing myth of vampirism.

The setting of the book was very normal. Gabrielle Maxwell's life is extremely realistic, the background is believable and the supporting characters are gently introduced. But although this is total fantasy, the paranormal aspects of the story are sympathetically injected into her surroundings.

The only reason that this book didn't rate 5 stars is because its not as intricate a read as a Hamilton. I was able to sit and read it in one sitting. However, this may well be a positive thing, as it was a highly addictive read and I'm definitely going to be ordering the next one in the series.

For those readers who have disliked the extensive sex in the later Anita Blake books, be warned that this book is very explicit and erotic in parts. It isn't necessarily the main thrust of the plot, but it does play a major role. Personally, I found this enjoyable and well written.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like J.R. Ward 20 July 2012
By Sylarah
Like a lot of other reviewers, I was tricked into reading this book because of its comparison to Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood-series.

I honestly found it so bad, that I had to read several of the Midnight Breed books, just to make sure that I did not judge the entire series based on one book. Needless to say, I was less than impressed and more than a little frustrated and bored.

This book, and indeed this series, is a mess of clichéed, lame and contrived plotlines combined with one-dimensional, stereotypical characters and uninspiring writing. While the author might have had good ideas at some point, the only positive thing I can say about the end result is that it was forgettable.

This is not the worst book I've ever read, but it was so forgettable and dumb that I felt somewhat insulted on behalf of paranormal romance as a genre. "Lowest common denominator" and "uninspiring" is the best way to describe this series.
