Product Description

Review

Auberon Waugh ... was the most controversial, the most abusive, perhaps the most brilliant journalist of his age - an acerbic wit, a traveller, a farceur, an epicure; above all, a hater of humbug in all its forms and of politicians in most of theirs.

(The Telegraph )

A master of the surreal

(Craig Brown )

The Dean Swift of his day

(AN Wilson )

An ideological trailblazer

(Boris Johnson )

The greatest journalist of his generation

(Geoffrey Wheatcroft )

Wickedly funny, but sometimes just wicked

(Lynn Barber )

A most unpleasant man

(Tony Benn )

'Absorbing and affectionate...This beautifully conceived anthology combines biographical detail with pithily hilarious extracts. Eclectic, thoughtful and always entertaining, this well-presented selection gives a fresh perspective on an extraordinary talent.'

I doubt if I would have liked Auberon Waugh if I had met him. He shared his father Evelyn's characteristics of arrogance and rudeness, but there is no doubting his intelligence and gift for writing. Time and again this well-chosen anthology made me laugh out loud as he cynically strips away the veneer of politicians and clerics who think they have a right to tell us how to spend our lives. His refreshing lack of political correctness is a welcome antidote to the ever-increasing restrictions on what we are allowed to say. It is a pity that he died relatively young. I would love to have seen what he makes of Sarah Palin.

hilarious 24 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
This is one of those books that you don't want to read, because you don't want to finish it. It's plain, laugh out loud hilarious. Ideal for those who believe that political correctness has got this country gripped by the throat (and hate it). Oh Waugh, where art thou at this hour of need? His loss is grievous - there is no one around today with the wit, imagination, and willingness to be loathed by the teeming hoards of opinion formers who actually form no opinion they have not already checked is acceptable. William Cook has got to mine the archives for more - please say there's more....

Great Read 18 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
I should preface this by saying that I have been a fan of Waugh for sometime; so I was expecting it to be good and was not disappointed. It is indeed a collection of his writings interspersed with personal notes rather than a biography. As a champion of the individual and the scourge of bureaucracy, cant and loony politics his views have an immediate appeal. If you agree with him it's great. I should warn anyone who believes that nanny government knows best will find it mostly indigestible. The pity is that he died without seeing the full horrors of Blairism and all it's attempts to turn us all into clients of an oligarchy.
