Biography

Rock superstars KISS release their new album Sonic Boom on October 5, 2009. Featuring 11 brand new KISS anthems, Sonic Boom is an emphatic statement from one of rock’s most iconic bands. Says guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley: “Sonic Boom is the perfect title for what we’re creating. It’s earth-shaking and deafening!” Adds bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons: “Sonic Boom is our confessional: when you look… Read more in Amazon's Kiss Store

Animalize....KISS were standing on top of the world. Their previous two albums, " Creatures Of The Night" & " Lick It Up" saw a huge new army of fans, once again sales were starting to reach the hazy 70's hysteria, they were a huge arena draw, Eric Carr made the drum throne his own, Vinnie Vincent was now regarded as one of the best rock/metal guitar wizards on the face of the planet and they had cemented their place as one of the biggest Heavy Metal bands on the planet....

Job done again????.....

Not quite...........

Behind the scenes, Vinnie Vincent's ego had infuriated Stanley & Simmons. The reports of bitter, sometimes borderline violent rows had become more frequent and disturbing. Vincent's new found fame & adulation went straight to his head, so much so that Simmons & Stanley sacked him......twice!!!..." The second time we just kept the door shut." Quoted Stanley......KISS had been here before.........

Enter another virtuoso, the late Mark " Mark St John" Norton.

Norton's gifted guitar skills made him a perfect replacement for Vincent....

The opening track was yet another all new KISS classic. Stanley's war cry at the beginning sets the tone. " Heaven's On Fire" roars, rocks and kicks all the way, " I've Had Enough" is an exceptional piece of power, that showcases the excellent skills of Norton. " While The City Sleeps" is dark, sassy & streetwise, Gene's trademark tongue in cheek approach comes to the fore on " Murder In High Heels" & " Lonely Is The Hunter". " Burn Bitch Burn" is a powerful slab of rock," Under The Gun" is the runaway train of KISS in full flow. Make no mistake, this is up there with the previous two albums.

AAAAAAA++++++ Brilliant.

But that's not quite it.............

The album sold by the shedload, the tour was selling out at breakneck speed....Nothing could go wrong again...........surley not???

Mark Norton had developed a rare disease called Reiter's Syndrome in his hands, which meant that recording commitments were very difficult and touring was practically impossible. Simmons & Stanley called on their old freind & former KISS session guitarist, Meat Loaf virtuoso Bob Kulick, who had recording & touring commitments of his own, so the three of them came up with a master stroke......

Enter Bob's Brother, Bruce......

like the previous album this is average again 2 classics heavens on fire and thrills in the night,opening track i've had enough into the fire also deserves praise(another for the fantasy live set),but the rest is 2nd rate dross and should never have been released,quality control clearly an issue,unfortunately it was later revealed that simmons took virtually no part in this recording,clearly losing the make up robbed kiss of the magic and the balls to explore various sounds see dynasty/unmasked and the elder,all were critisiced but are far more honest than this facsimile garbage,even the live set was now 70% tracks from last 3 discs and their history being ignored,the younger fans seemed to lap it up and these albums kept going platinum!!!! A quick return to europe saw them goin thru the motions,the gig at the glasgow apollo was no where near the hysteria level that that prev gig had, bruce looked like a scared rabbit on stage,how had it come to this.

I have read some favourable reviews of this album, although it escapes me why. I have been a diehard KISS fan for 9 years and own everything in their collection, but this is one I rarely return to.

The first problem is the absence of bassist Gene Simmons, who has his parts done for him on most of the record while he was off filming movies. His lack of songwriting hurts the band. The other problem was that over the last few records, the band had had help writing the songs from producers and memebrs such as Ace Frehley and Vinne Vincent. With Paul Stanley doing most of the production himself and the aforementioned members. gone, the material was rather weak. Only Heaven's on Fire really stands out, although I've had Enough (Into the Fire) and Thrills in the Night are good 1890s rock. Most of the album has faded into mediocrity, saved only by a couple of standout tracks.

Despite the albums's commercial success (it was the first KISS album to go Platinum in 5 years), this remains the lowest point of their career. For 1980s unmasked KISS I recommend Crazy Nights, Hot in the Shade and Lick it Up above this. Should be one of the last you add to your collection.
