Format:Audio CD
Forget the Hollywood Hype, this is the real thing. From the first note of "The Sands of Time", Alfred Drake weaves a spell with his voice that is absolutely breathtaking, and he is more than ably supported by the rest of the cast, especially Doretta Morrow as Marsinah. The highlight of the recording, however, has to be "And This Is My Beloved" which the Hollywood version, very sensibly, didn't even try to repeat. This one song, quite simply, makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up and makes you grateful that someone had the foresight to record this before it was lost forever.
Howard Keel did a good enough job in the film, but nothing can touch the sheer beauty of this original stage version. Accept no substitutes!

The quality of the sound has been improved on later recordings, although only just! Stereo versus mono but what mono, the quality of the performance has never been equalled. This recording belongs in any collection alongside "My Fair Lady", "West Side Story" and "Candide", all produced of course by Goddard Lieberson, who rarely put a foot wrong.
There isn't much to add to what the other reviewers have said other than that although other recordings have their merits, there is something very special about this one. There is a spontaneity about it that makes it sparkle so. The same is true of all the albums I've listed: each cast, conductor and orchestra was at the absolute peak of its game when the alums were recorded.
If you must have stereo, the TER recoding on two discs comes close to equalling this in terms of performance and has every note of the score plus an interesting appendix. Even Alfred Drake's second recording in stereo, the Lincoln Center production misses the spontaneity of this one and no other cast matches the supreme Doretta Morrow, the sexy Joan Diener, the excellent Richard Kiley and Henry Calvin.
This is no longer cheap in the UK but it has been beautifully remastered and, without a doubt, is the one to get. I have most of the others and this is the one I would not want to be without.

This cast recording has very satisfying orchestrations. Full and slightly sybaritic, perfectly suited to the compositions.
The cast is phenomenal. The music required real singers and got them in spades. Doretta Morrow and Richard Kiley get the best songs in the show and sing with control and sincerity. Joan Diener going through her range at the end of Not Since Ninevah has to be heard.
Alfred Drake is at his sly best in this show. He sings (and acts) with superb attention to the lyrics. His wonderful voice and stage presence must have been something to experience on stage. Considering that he doesn't get to sing the big hits of Kismet, his overall command of the show is remarkable.
One of the great Original Broadway Casts albums.
