In college Raj Malhotra (Shahid Kapur) was numero uno. In academics, sports, dramatics and touted as the next cover of Time magazine. But four years after winning the best-student-of-the-year trophy from his architectural college, he's wondering why a brilliant architect like him, with designs to set the Canadian landscape on fire, is still struggling to find that One Big Chance to showcase his mettle. It's almost as though some negative kismat is following him around because whenever something good is about to happen, it seems doomed to fail. Why else would his alarm refuse to ring, his shower stop midway, his car refuse to start, just when he's in a tearing hurry to reach a crucial meeting on time? The end result is the same? The deal is dead or the client is dead! Priya is a tough-talking, tough-decision taking girl with a heart of gold. She is an idealist who is intent on making the world a better, more humane place and is quite willing to fight a lone battle for it. She is a doer who believes in action. Life for her is clearly colored in blacks and whites. Shades of grey have no role for her. She will give her all to her causes, her people and her love and expect nothing less in return. Raj even succeeds in persuading pretty Priya (Vidya Balan) that he's the Messiah who can save her beloved Community Center from destruction? And also opened her eyes to her philandering fiancé (Amit Verma). Raj even manages to thwart the evil designs of old-college-foe-turned-deadly-professional- enemy Dave Kataria (Manoj Bohra)? Does this mean that Raj has unwittingly discovered his lucky charm? Has lady luck finally decided to smile on him?

5.0 out of 5 stars A story a humble man's reward 27 Sep 2009
Format:DVD
Shahruhk Khan has been concerned in recent years with portraying the lives of ordinary people, the people that might go to see his films in provincial movie theatres around India. When he talks about ordinary people, he in no way means, boring, uninteresting people; on the contrary, he wants to celebrate the extraordinary that exists in most people's lives.
Surinder serves Punjab Power with all his sincere heart and happily lives a quiet life alone in Amritsar with the friendship of his best buddy Bobby. Fate finds him married to a woman for whom he has a deep love, but who has suffered the cruel loss of a fiance, which has left her closed to the idea of loving again. Besides, Surinder is no Bollywood hero to look at.
The story unfolds in the most unexpected of ways and has great humour, some very moving moments and gives you a lot to think about. Shahruhk dares the viewer not to fall in love with Suri. Try to resist. I couldn't. The music is also very moving and quite unusual and grows on you until it becomes the soundtrack to your day. I wish there was a Suri out there for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable modern movie 20 May 2009
By Lyn
Format:DVD
This was a really nice way to spend some hours. It isn't a deep one but it has a certain quality to it that doesn't make it entirely superficial either. For its romantic genre it fits the bill.
The title suggests it's about a couple fated to be together but the story is a little more than that. It is about fate and luck generally and the girl being his lucky charm when things go right for him. There is also a psychic (played delightfully by an eccentric looking Judi Chawla) who coaches the hero about working with fate.
The hero is played by Shahid Kapoor. He is charismatic and draws the eye on screen but he isn't just a pretty face. Not only is he handsome but he acts and moves well. As a trained dancer his dancing is always worth watching and he conveys emotions well.
There is good chemistry between he and Vidya Blan his lucky charm. There are a few good songs and a fairly sustained interest in the pace to the romance.
It is a movie with heart with a co-theme of whether business can work with also finding a way to assist others rather than just going for the bottom line.
The movie is set in Canada and very contemporary in feel. I recommend it for good light entertainment.
I would like the manufacturers of these DVDs to see if they can do something about end credits that accompany a final song. These are reduced to extremely small size when played on a home TV screen. You access this same small format even if you retrieve them through the songs menu. The size and concept work well on a cinema screen but need to be transformed in some way for the home screen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Fun with a Heart of Gold 21 April 2010
Format:DVD
My family and I really enjoyed this feel-good Bollywood Romantic Comedy.

The cinematograpy is light and bright and this is carried through in the script and direction, which is well-paced and funny. The lead characters, Raj (Shahid Kapoor) and Priya (Vidya Balan) are drawn as likeable 'real' human beings who develop a believable chemistry. They are well-supported by a lively ensemble of supporting characters, notably Raj's business partner who is a real comic scene-stealer and the ever watchable Om Puri (Mr Gill, the elusive client) who brings an authentic feel to everything he appears in. Bollywood comedy is not something I usually like, but this has a lighter, more contemporary touch which had us laughing out loud.

One further point of recommendation for this film is that it can be genuinely enjoyed by the whole family and lead to some interesting discussions in our household (8 year old and 6 year old) regarding the ethics of corporate business, plus they got most of the jokes on their own!

The plot itself of an over-achieving star college student whose fate (Kismet) thwarts his attempts at professional success in the real world seems pretty heavy-handed at the start (shower water running out, car not starting, etc), but as the film develops and more characters are introduced, there is genuine plot tension and without giving the ending away, how this tension is resolved with a final flourish is simply magic!

Highly recommended.
