It was thanks to old school pal Lauren Bacall that Kirk Douglas got his break into films; Hal Wallis was on his way to New York to look for new talent when Bacall suggested he take a look at Douglas, with Kirk subsequently landing a starring role in the Barbara Stanwyck film The Strange Case Of Martha Ivers on the strength of the recommendation. His film career thereafter took off, with major roles, Academy awards and a place on the listing of the greatest screen legends of all time.
