This album has it all! Kiri in great Jazzy voice, the wonderful talent of Andre, and outstanding songs. Each artist showing that they can move comfortably from the great Classics to outstanding jazz interpretations of the best popular songs. This is the epitome of class and style. If you like the best of everything......go for this ! !

I'm glad to say I don't own this, but I did borrow a friend's copy and was shocked at how bad it was. I was really disappointed because I already had Previn's three jazz trio discs which were recorded in the years leading up to this release (After Hours (1989), Uptown (1990) and the live Old Friends (1992)) and they really are fabulous. I'm afraid this disc suffers, as the other 1-star reviewer says, from Dame Kiri's leaden singing and almost pathological inability to swing or make these fantastic songs sound like they're fun. A first-rate opera singer she may be, but just like Jamie Cullum doesn't try to sing Wagner, dear old Kiri should have given this one a miss.

My very strong recommendation would be for you to buy the three instrumental albums I've listed above (you can get them for less than a tenner each): the latter two feature exactly the same trio as accompanies DKtK on this disc, but they are able to show just what sophisticated fun jazz can be without having a totally inappropriate singer dragging their timing down.

This is truely awful. Dame Kiri is obviously a great opera singer, but as in her interpetation of 'West Side Story' she really has stretched her abilities way to far on this her 'Jazz' album, though i use the word sparingly. It is so unbelievably dull and formalic and yes, at times rather embarassing to hear her attempt these great songs. Swinging it isn't even when it tries. Her version of 'autumn leaves' left me cringing. Previn throws in some good solo's here and there and the rhythm section does it best, but oh dear Kiri deffinately a mistake on yours and your record companies. What it basically is is an opera singer attempting a new form and failing dismally. No wonder you can buy it so cheap.

Wonderful music, even if people don't like opera singers performing jazz - they should listen to this recording. The band is great!

Kiri does it again! 25 April 2004
By anthony colin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Wonderful! As is everything the inimitable Kiri does. No, she does not sound like other jazz singers but adds the Kiri touch that has made her one of the most listened to of all performers, whether of opera or jazz. This CD made my ears very happy. I'd advised the disgruntled writer to hold on to her CD--there is only one available on the entire internet and the seller is asking for $75.00. An unmistakable message--it appears that Kiri lovers don't want to part with Kiri CDs. Also advise other viewers to get the VHS from which this CD was made. Inexpensive now but it'll not be for long. It's called Kiri & Andre: The making of Sidetracks. It has the best closeups of Kiri that I've ever seen and shows what a happy-go-lucky gal she is. Also recommend her Kiri! on VHS (her 50th Birthday Concert) It is one of the best musical recitals ever made--period. Sorry, the price is out of sight.

"A lesson in laid back CLASS" 14 Oct. 2004
By Kip Walton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Here is the most beautiful rendition of "Never Was You" ever with the restrained vocal purity of Kiri and the awesome chords of Andre's piano...a real gem. Ray Brown and Mundell also contribute their world-class talents to this unique UNPRESSURED album. A treasure that will please music lovers for many years. GRAB IT WHILE YOU CAN!

Elegance Defined 10 Feb. 2012
By Darjeeling Express - Published on Amazon.com

I too am a huge fan of these classic songs and have heard them interpreted by superb singers. I am not a "Kiriphile", but I am familiar with her superb work in classical opera, particularly Puccini. Her work here is astounding. She takes her highly trained voice and brings to these classics a delicacy and lightness I never would have expected and informs them with incredible phrasing and emotion. I never thought of comparing Kiri Te Kanawa with Audra McDonald and Barbara Cook, but the comparisons are very fair, and an incredible compliment to each artist. Brava.

Derails rather than sidetracks! 19 Aug. 2012
By Manny Herz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Nowadays it is fashionable, financially necessary and sometimes intriguing for musical performers to "cross over".
This is a case of a true flop. Every musical performer is top notch, but the jarring effect of Ms. Kanawa's style together with that of the jazz trio is close to painful. With an orchestral background like the ones one gets with Sinatra or Streisand, her renditions could have been quite enjoyable, but with this mismatch only masochists need apply.
