Product Description

Glittering. That’s how Katie Takeshima’s sister, Lynn, makes everything seem. The sky is kira-kira because its color is deep but see-through at the same time. The sea is kira-kira for the same reason. And so are people’s eyes. When Katie and her family move from a Japanese community in Iowa to the Deep South of Georgia, it’s Lynn who explains to her why people stop them on the street to stare. And it’s Lynn who, with her special way of viewing the world, teaches Katie to look beyond tomorrow. But when Lynn becomes desperately ill, and the whole family begins to fall apart, it is up to Katie to find a way to remind them all that there is always something glittering—kira-kira—in the future.
Luminous in its persistence of love and hope, Kira-Kira is Cynthia Kadohata’s stunning debut in middle-grade fiction.

Katie has been moved from her home to live in the Deep South. She idolises her sister, Lynnie, who makes everything seem alive and beautiful. However as the girls get older, they begin to grow apart slightly. When Lynnie becomes terminally ill, it is up to Katie to find the Kira Kira (the beautiful things) in life.

What made me like Kira Kira is that it is written with such child- like innocence. Katie is not particularlr pretty or clever in her eyes, but nevertheless an excellent main character. Kira Kira is poignant, beautiful, sad and completely compelling. I am both shocked and amazed that no- one else has reviewed this tremendous book.

I read this book in the original paper format, but I decided to write a review on here too. The story is narrated in first person, almost instantly capturing your full attention and, before long. your heart too. Tragic, compelling, beautiful and an example of work that is truly Kira-Kira!
P.S. Please read this, I promise you'll love it and it will stay with you for life! ^-^

Although this is a book for juniors, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Kind of reminded me of my relationship with my sister in our childhood, the way we looked after each other. Made me smile, brought tears to my eyes. The way Cynthia tells the story in simple writing also delivers the story well.
