Review

‘Adams’s chronicle is an important study of one of England’s literary heroes. He tries to overturn preconceptions that the reader may hold about Kipling and the common perception of him as imperialist, misogynist and racist.’ (FT Magazine )

'an enjoyably confrontational biography. Adams identifies Kipling's self-deception as mirrored in the self-deception of the empire whose values he promoted in life and literature.' (The Times )

5.0 out of 5 stars Kipling the Great 19 April 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have with me other biographies of Kipling, but this one is unique, lucid and precise. This is not a detailed biography as of Caringaton^s, but similar to good biography of Edward Shanks. Kipling is very much loved Poet, Story Writer, and a Novelist. He worked very hard during his period In Lahore and in Allahabad in India. He knew India so deep even more than the Indian knew of their country- that is why is is much loved literary giant of British Period. Jad Adams have very critically written his poem ^ My boy Jack ^ This is brief but good and lovable life of Great Kipling. There is no reason he should go in extinction One thing I noticed in this biography - that Mr Jad Adams has not reviewed his great and best piece of poem ^ IF ^ and philosophy of Kipling. He became so famous that period in India that Viceroy of India not only knew him but consulted for his advice. He never run after fame. India- and India alone was his subject that is why is so loved and respected. I request Mr Jad Adams to include If and philosophy of Kipling in his next Edition of this biography. I cite from Kipling ^ I forgot, my name my speech for I died, my wife and children came, I knew them not. My mother followed and at her bosom and at her call I remembered all^

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing purchase 8 Jun 2010
Format:Hardcover
I have always had a great facination with Kipling and bought this book at Batemans in an attempt to really learn about the man. I have struggled (in a way that Kipling himself would recognise!) through most of the book and have found it a comprehensive but very difficult read. Would not recommend it to other than the very serious research student.
