Product Description

Resident in Belgium, Congolese vocalist, rapper and composer Baloji returned to Kinshasa to make this recording with some of that chaotic city's finest musicians, including Konono No1 and Zaiko Langa Langa. Baloji's unique vocal sounds marries diverse styles including traditional rumba, retro-futuristic tradi-modern styles soukous, acoustic traditional music, ska roots and afro funk.

Brought to Belgium at the age of 4 Baloji was brought up on hip-hop, rap and dance and was a member of platinum selling hip-hop group Starflam Collective. His first solo recording "Hotel Impala" (2008), a mix of soul, afrobeat and hip-hop was a certified Gold Record in Belgium and won numerous awards both for its music and lyrics.

After the release of "Hotel Impala" Baloji decided to go to the Congo and to make a deeper exploration of his roots. Intending to rework songs from the album with local musicians, the results were so exciting that he ended up writing and recording 6 entirely new songs as well as completely rearranging and re-recording tracks from "Hotel Impala". The resulting "Kinshasa Succursale" album features contributions from some of the finest musicians from Kinshasa, including Konono No1 and Zaiko Langa Langa.

Baloji's unique vocals and rapping have attracted the attention of DJs and producers across the world and two bonus remixes are included, one by UK electronic producer déBruit, and another which features rising Ghanaian-American hip hop artist Blitz the Ambassador.

"Baloji represents an exciting young voice from the continent that is redefining what westerners typically associate with being music from Africa. Through his mic skills, visual style and sheer charm, he's able to seem contemporary but vintage at the same time." - The Guardian

Personnel: Baloji (rapping, vocals) & L'orchestre De La Katuba : Avril Lahaluma (drums), Rodriguez Vangama (lead guitar), Angou Ingutu (bass), Habacuc Mfundani (drums), Tshotsho Mathiaba (guitar), Augustso Liandja (guitar), Bijoux Zola (bass) plus special guests Konono N°1 (3,9), Monik Tenday (2,3), Bebson de la Rue & Trionyx (10), Larousse Marciano (6), Moise Ilunga (3,13), Royce Mbumba (1,9), the Fanfare La Confiance horns, Choeur de la Grace vocal ensemble and others

5.0 out of 5 stars Kinshasa Succursale 19 Aug 2010
By Paul Denning - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Kinshasa Succursale is an incredible new album by the Belgo-Congolese artist Baloji. The music cannot be reduced to a simple genre such as hip-hop or rap. There are songs that sound like rap and other like soul. Acoustic guitars?! It all comes together magnificently on this cd. Baloji has an incredible voice as well.

"Le jour d'apres/ Siku ya baadaye (Independence cha-cha)is the bittersweet remake of the Congolese classic from 1960. Baloji's rhymes slide smoothly over this incredible song.

Each song is unique and different. The cd is well worth the price as it comes with a bonus DVD not mentioned in product details.

If you want to listen to something new, fresh and intelligent check this cd out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully nuanced collage of soulfully rocking flavours - The Telegraph, UK 24 Jan 2012
By mundo - Published on Amazon.com
Kinshasa Succursale is the second full length recording by BALOJI, and his forst with Crammed. It is more than a follow up album, it is a completely new departure for the artist. Originally born in Lubumbashi in the south-eastern portion of the Congo, BALOJI immigrated to Belgium with his father at the age of four. His eternal quest for self-identity came to light when we spoke with his mother for the first time in 24 years. He knew he had to go back. This recording is the fruit of his return voyage to his motherland.

BALOJI scoured the streets of Kinshasa for the finest musicians and many of them appear here: Konono No 1, Zaïko Langa-Langa, Royce Mbumba, La chorale de la Grâce, Bebson de la Rue, and Moïse Illunga among others. This 13 track album features two bonus remixes: one by underground electronic legend dÉbruit, and the other by G77 with Blitz the Ambassador, Joya Mooi & Freddy Massamba, all players in the international African scene.
