As usual, an excellent Amazon dispatch and delivery experience.

I opened the box, charged the wi-drive for a while then loaded some files onto it via the PC. Disconnected the wi-drive from the PC turned it on and then connected my iPad and iPhone to it; straight forward and worked first time. I then set up a bridge to enable access to the internet at the same time as the wi-drive; once again, no problems.
I then made a mistake of updating the firmware on the wi-drive! Although I could still connect to it via my iPad, my iPhone had a problem with the wi-drive app reporting that it could not access the drive even though the phone showed it as being connected. Much head scratching and several minutes later, I decided to renew the lease of the wi-drive wifi connection on my iPhone and it worked again!

As others have reported, the file types that wi-drive app supports is quite limited; I will play with some other apps in due course but for the moment the drive and the app meet my needs. I have only rated this 4 stars due to the limited file formats that are supported and the small connectivity problem that I experienced after updating the firmware.

Having used the Wi-Drive for a few days, I have discovered the battery life is somewhat lacking. At best I can get 2 hours out of it when just connecting to one IOS device; for this reason I have reduced my score to 3 stars

Don't let the the bad reviews put you off this very clever and amazing device. I will try to explain in detail why I think this is a must have and why I believe its better having one of these with for example a 16gb iPad rather than a 32gb iPad.

Whilst I love my iPad and iPhone and would not be without them there are some very frustrating limitations mainly due to iTunes which you must use to add media. Some off these limitations I was not aware before purchasing the iPad.

For me the iPad really comes into its own when travelling and its where I appreciate it most but this is where you will most likely encounter the iTunes quirks and limitations.

One of the biggest issues with Apple devices is that if you load up a load of films for example and then go travelling you will have no way what so ever to add extra media unless of course you pay for it through the iTunes store as you are only allowed one iTunes library on one PC which will usually be your home PC. So if you are carrying with you a hard drive full of movies music or photos it will never the see the light of day on your iPad or iPhone if your away from home and that is a very big drawback.

This is where the Kingston wi drive comes to the rescue. You download a free app then connect it to any PC and drag and drop your media. Within minutes its available on your apple devices. Absolute genius.

The Kingston wi drive also solves a number of other problems. One of them being the length of time it takes to transfer media to your Apple device via iTunes because of all the syncing, backing up and transferring purchases it needs to do. This can be a nightmare if your in a hurry and want to add something quickly which is almost impossible.

I have just purchased a Kindle Fire HD and wanted to put my mp3 tracks on it as well as my books, but my mp3's weighed in at over 9gb in size. I didn't want to clutter the Kindle with this so looked for an alternative and the Kingston Wi Drive fitted the bill. Although a little more pricey than I expected the purchase was made. Arrived promptly, set up was simple (I am a pensioner) and transfer of my music files was accomplished using "drag and drop". Took a while but not overly so given the size of the files. Turning on the drive after the transfer there is a delay until the wi fi kicks in and the drive becomes available to access (you do need to download the Wi Drive App to your Kindle first). However once available the Kindle found the drive quickly and access achieved painlessly. The read speed is quick and accurate. You need to note that you can save files to the drive that may not be able to be read by your Kindle, so check first before loading files. The unit is black and looks good and is well made. The price and the delay at start up waiting for wi fi have prompted me to drop one star. I would recommend this.

Size: 16GB Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
NOTE: this review refers to the Kingston 16GB Portable Storage Wi-Drive. It does NOT refer to Mobilelite Wireless Reader to which for some reason Amazon has linked all the same reviews.

The Wi-Drive is a small, light solid-state drive which connects by USB to your PC or Mac, so you can copy your files such as video, images and music, and then wirelessly to your iPhone or iPad for viewing. The device is the size of a smallish mobile phone, smart in appearance with comfortable rounded edges, and powered by a rechargeable battery. It comes with a short "Getting started" leaflet which explains the basics: charge the drive with the USB cable, copy some files to it, then set your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to connect to its wifi transmitter. Download the free Wi-Drive app and run it to access the files.

So far so good, and it does work, but there are multiple inconveniences, some the fault of Apple for locking down the iOS operating system so tightly, and some the fault of Kingston.

The first problem is that your Apple device can only connect to one wifi connection at a time. It follows that if it is connected to the Wi-Drive, it is not also connected to the internet over wi-fi, though if you have a 3G connection that is not affected. Most people prefer to use wi-fi when available, since it is cheaper and faster, so this is a big issue. Fortunately there is a workaround. You can set the Wi-Drive to connect to your wifi network, and then your Apple device can reach the internet via the Wi-Drive.

This does work, though the Wi-Drive is fussy about what it will connect to.
