3.0 out of 5 stars Small and light but beware inconvenient features 19 Dec 2011
By Mr. T. Anderson TOP 500 REVIEWER
Size Name:2.5|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Wi-Drive is a small, light solid-state drive which connects by USB to your PC or Mac, so you can copy your files such as video, images and music, and then wirelessly to your iPhone or iPad for viewing. The device is the size of a smallish mobile phone, smart in appearance with comfortable rounded edges, and powered by a rechargeable battery. It comes with a short "Getting started" leaflet which explains the basics: charge the drive with the USB cable, copy some files to it, then set your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to connect to its wifi transmitter. Download the free Wi-Drive app and run it to access the files.

So far so good, and it does work, but there are multiple inconveniences, some the fault of Apple for locking down the iOS operating system so tightly, and some the fault of Kingston.

The first problem is that your Apple device can only connect to one wifi connection at a time. It follows that if it is connected to the Wi-Drive, it is not also connected to the internet over wi-fi, though if you have a 3G connection that is not affected. Most people prefer to use wi-fi when available, since it is cheaper and faster, so this is a big issue. Fortunately there is a workaround. You can set the Wi-Drive to connect to your wifi network, and then your Apple device can reach the internet via the Wi-Drive.

This does work, though the Wi-Drive is fussy about what it will connect to. Online support says that you must only have one security protocol enabled on your wi-fi network, otherwise the connection will fail. In my case, I was successful with a Netgear access point, but not with a Belkin, and I am not sure why.

Connecting via wi-fi is somewhat inconvenient anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great hardware, poor software 31 Mar 2012
Size Name:32GB|Amazon Verified Purchase
The hardware is very nice. It's a nice slim and compact device, the battery life is as described when only one device is connected, it's just a shame that it's let down by a poor iOS app.

Any video file that the app recognises (mov, m4v etc) can only be streamed, no option to download. Also only files within the app can be uploaded to the device and there is no way to get files into the app other than downloading them from the device. There is no option to select a file in a different app and choose "open in Wi-Drive".

Fortunately the Wi-drive hardware has its own IP and can be accessed via WebDAV using different 3rd party apps. For general file management, uploading and downloading I have been using ReedleDocs because it's easy to get most files into the app which can then be uploaded. For video files I've been using a free app called AcePlayer, it supports a lot more formats than the official Wi-Drive app and ANY video can be either streamed or downloaded.

If it hadn't been for these 3rd party apps I would have probably returned the Wi-Drive as I found it far too restrictive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Like a Charm, a Must Have ! 9 Mar 2012
By Davey
Size Name:2.5
Don't let the the bad reviews put you off this very clever and amazing device. I will try to explain in detail why I think this is a must have and why I believe its better having one of these with for example a 16gb iPad rather than a 32gb iPad.

Whilst I love my iPad and iPhone and would not be without them there are some very frustrating limitations mainly due to iTunes which you must use to add media. Some off these limitations I was not aware before purchasing the iPad.

For me the iPad really comes into its own when travelling and its where I appreciate it most but this is where you will most likely encounter the iTunes quirks and limitations.

One of the biggest issues with Apple devices is that if you load up a load of films for example and then go travelling you will have no way what so ever to add extra media unless of course you pay for it through the iTunes store as you are only allowed one iTunes library on one PC which will usually be your home PC. So if you are carrying with you a hard drive full of movies music or photos it will never the see the light of day on your iPad or iPhone if your away from home and that is a very big drawback.

This is where the Kingston wi drive comes to the rescue. You download a free app then connect it to any PC and drag and drop your media. Within minutes its available on your apple devices. Absolute genius.

The Kingston wi drive also solves a number of other problems. One of them being the length of time it takes to transfer media to your Apple device via iTunes because of all the syncing, backing up and transferring purchases it needs to do. This can be a nightmare if your in a hurry and want to add something quickly which is almost impossible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Product 15 May 2012
Size Name:32GB|Amazon Verified Purchase
Pros:

Excellent product, lightweight, small enough to travel with in hand luggage and great value at current price compared to when first released. Works like a dream. Thru pass for internet connection no problems (best to choose a different channel for your Wi-Drive network from your main network). If you want to use it whilst charging plug it in first then switch it on. Doing it the other way will disconnect the Wi-Drive network. If you want a mains charger I would recommend the iGo AC Wall Charger from Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004DNVNYC/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00).

Cons:

It takes a minute or two set up the network when switched on, and when you add anything to the drive it takes a little while to show the index again when next switched on as it re-scans the drive (and I am talking of adding large video files here) but other than that streaming, quality, sound sync all perfect. Gets a little warm so best not carried in pocket when in use, but nothing to get concerned about.
