It might be true that this SSD does not compete with other SSDs in the market for what concerns reading and writing speed. But it absolutely outperforms laptop hard drives. I installed it on a Samsung NC20 running Ubuntu and now everything runs about at least twice as fast. X starts in around 16-18 seconds, then KDE take its usual time to load, but I think that has to do with bugs in KDE. Shutting down is an even more amazing experience. Starting large programs still takes some time but smaller tasks are mainly instantaneous. Installing applications in Ubuntu is much faster too. I believe the remaining sluggishness is due to the graphic card. If you think about the fact that the desktop speed is mainly linked to the slowest component of your machine and you have a laptop, then this product can really do some magic for you. I applied a bunch of tricks, like using relatime for the ext4 partitions, tmpfs for the /tmp directory, and changing the scheduler from cfq to noop. But I could not experience any noticeable improvement. Overall you can use this product as if it was an HDD, but a faster one. This version of the SSD does not come with any CD or cables. You will have to find your own way to move files from your HDD to your SSD. Since I was reinstalling a new version of Ubuntu that was not a big deal for me. But I wish laptop were designed with two SATA slots nowadays, so that you could have a hybrid machine with both SSD for speed and HDD for storage.
