Kingston USB 3.0

Kingston's USB 3.0 range is an ultra-fast way to transfer photos, music and video files between all kinds of digital devices. The amount of data stored on these devices is rapidly increasing, so apart from being able to easily access data, fast data transfer is just as important in order to make the best of your time.

Kingston USB 3.0
What is USB 3.0?

USB 3.0 is a major revision to the Universal Serial Bus (USB). It offers the same ease-of-use and plug and play capabilities as previous generations of USB technologies, but with up to a 10 times performance increase and better power management.

Why Do You Need That Much Speed?

USB 3.0 helps you save more time and USB 3.0 drive transfers files faster than USB 2.0 drives. Depending on the drive you choose and the type of files you transfer, USB 3.0 can save you a lot of time compared to standard USB 2.0 drives.

Why Do I Need a USB 3.0 Drive When I Use Only USB 2.0 Ports?

Due to the wide availability of USB 2.0 devices, USB 3.0 devices had to be backwards compatible. Even when you use USB 3.0 drives on your USB 2.0 host devices, you'll save time.

How Fast is USB 3.0?
Kingston USB 3.0
USB 3.0: Look for the blue connector.

The performance increase is achieved through the USB 3.0 technology, which allows multiple streams of data transfer and boosts its peak signaling bandwidth to 5Gbp/s compared to 480Mbp/s on USB 2.0.

Will a USB 3.0 Drive Work on My Device with USB 2.0 Ports?

USB 3.0 devices are compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports and connectors, but will only run at the host device performance.

Nice product, looks well made and the transfer speeds are pretty good but the case is big, make no mistake, it doesn't look that big in the picture, but it is.

On the plus side, it probably withstands a fair amount of abuse and the size and metal body also make it a good choice for a weapon, so if you're walking home late at night and you have this attached to a lanyard, you can swing it round your head like a ninja in combat and fend off enemies.

First off, I needed a drive that:

(a) is solidly built, because my last one pretty much disintegrated...this feels quite solid, like it will stand the test of time well. Hopefully it won't scratch easily either...I'll update this post if any signs of wear start becoming visible;

(b) has a good amount of storage space - I am an IT/Engineering University student and frequently need to put many large-ish files on a pen drive, and the 32GB model provides ample space for my needs (note that, like any storage device, there is less space than the claimed amount - in this case, there's 28.8GB of storage space available). There are even 64GB and 128GB versions. Note that it comes formatted as FAT32 (typical on pen drives and even some external hard disks) so files larger than 4GB cannot be written to the drive. However you can always format it to NTFS (if you're on a Windows system) if you really need to store files larger than 4GB. In most cases, leaving it formatted as FAT32 is best, since it ensures compatibility with devices such as DVD players, Mac's etc. (NTFS is a Windows standard, so the drive would likely only be recognisable on Windows devices);

(c) is fast. Modern computers all come with USB3.0 ports so a USB3.0-compatible drive was essential. The claimed speeds are what attracted me to this drive, in fact - you can buy other cheaper 32GB pen drives but they are rated at slower speeds. Thankfully, I have managed to achieve these speeds in practice too. Of course, note that it depends on what sort of files you're reading/writing because sometimes transfer speeds may be slower than claimed. Edit: note that I have primarily used this drive on a modern Win 8.

Functionality-wise, this does exactly what it says on the tin: it's a 32Gb thumbdrive that utilises USB 3.0 for high-speed data transfer.

Aesthetically, this thing is ugly, and what I wasn't prepared for is just how massive this thing is physically. I admit that I may have been spoilt by the Kingston DTSE9 series, which are probably about as small as a thumbdrive can get while still being attachable to your keyring... but this thing positively dwarfs it (see photo attached). I estimate it's about 8 times the volume of it's little brother, which does come in 32Gb also (although not USB 3.0).

Also, the slider seems backwards: rather than the USB plug sliding out of the case, the case splits in half and slides over the plug, leaving a gaping expanse of cheap white plastic in the middle (again, see photo).

Arrived promptly and as described and would use them again. There is one small fault with the product and that is it is a bit too big to fit in some of the recessed usb holes you find in some laptops and PCs

A very fast USB key, and more than enough space for me (this year...).
Quite capable of maxing out the USB2 bandwidth completely (can't get any faster), and provides the advertised speeds on USB3 (also very fast, if not the fastest available right now). Plug and play, with no driver issues on Windows 7 x64.
It has a solid design being encased in aluminium, which does make it a little heavy. I keep it on my keys and it gets thrown around, so the strength is far more important to me than the weight. The clip that holds it closed is a little weak though, so it does tend to open itself occasionally. I doubt this will lead to any damage to the plug (with my levels of abuse) as it doesn't open all the way.

Rare to actually achieve advertised speeds, let alone beat them!!

Write speeds -
On my main PC I am averaging 80-140MBps
On other older ones I'm getting 50-70MBps

Read-
On my main PC getting average of 200-230MBps
on the older ones its 95-155MBps

So as you can see, it does do as it states, but it will depend on the system you use.
One thing I wasn't expecting was the size of it, It's a big boy 68mm long 23mm wide and 12mm thick as you see in the picture. I don't see it as a bad point and it feels well made and nice when you plug it in (you'll know what I mean when you get one).
If your in the market for a new USB 3.0, for the price, this is the one. For the quality, this is the one, and considering the first two points, for the speed this is the one....

This is a fast drive and seems better made mechanically than many, but be aware that it is fat enough to be a problem if you have USB sockets that don't have quite a lot of space around them...

I went for this initially as a backup as my current regular USB memory stick was playing up, and... well... I'm glad I did.

Fast, looks well made, plenty of space, and USB 3.0. In fact, it feels faster than my old previous drive (the Corsair Flash Voyager GT for anyone who's interested) - portable Chrome certainly works very well on it anyway, none of the random hanging that there was on the previous USB - so much so it's quickly become my main 'go everywhere' memory stick now. The little eyelet for hooking onto a lanyard is the perfect size.

A few points; as just about everyone else has said, it's bigger than you'd expect - if you have recessed USB ports you'll likely need an extension cord or a different drive. It's heavier too than you'd expect too, probably because of the metal body (though that did not really warrant Amazon sending it out in an A4 cardboard envelope). The slider is great (and half the reason I went for this in the first place- saves on losing (and replacing) multiple caps, however it doesn't seem to 'lock' in place so if you're trying to do everything one handed it may open/close itself occasionally if you're attempting to do the opposite at the time.
