What is USB 3.0?

USB 3.0 is the next major revision to the Universal Serial Bus (USB). It offers the same ease-of-use and plug and play capabilities as previous generations of USB technologies, but with up to a 10X performance increase and better power management.

Why Do You Need That Much Speed?

USB 3.0 helps you save more time and USB 3.0 drive transfers files faster than USB 2.0 drives. Depending on the drive you choose and the type of files you transfer, USB 3.0 can save you a lot of time compared to standard USB 2.0 drives.

Why Do I Need a USB 3.0 Drive When I Use Only USB 2.0 Ports?

Due to the wide availability of USB 2.0 devices, USB 3.0 devices had to be backwards compatible. Even when you use USB 3.0 drives on your USB 2.0 host devices, you'll save time.

How Fast is USB 3.0?

The performance increase is achieved through the USB 3.0 technology, which allows multiple streams of data transfer and boosts its peak signaling bandwidth to 5Gbp/s compared to 480Mbp/s on USB 2.0.

Kingston USB 3.0
USB 3.0: Look for the blue connector.
Will a USB 3.0 Drive Work on My Device with USB 2.0 Ports?

USB 3.0 devices are compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports and connectors, but will only run at the host device performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A step in the right direction but... 14 May 2014
Size Name:8GB|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
With more and more data being carried around on small portable media devices, the issue of protecting against data theft through the provision of automatic password protection and encryption becomes increasingly pressing. The "DataTraveler Locker+ G3" is Kingston Technology's attempt to provide an easy to use, hassle-free solution to the thorny issue of data security for plug-in USB-based storage devices.

The idea behind this particular solution is simple enough: a pen-drive device with a 10Mb area of the overall storage set aside as a separate read-only drive, formatted as an ISO 9660 (joliet) volume, which will appear to your computer as a DVD-RW disc as soon as it is plugged into one of the computer's USB ports. The actual storage area of the device can be accessed only via the software pre-loaded into this write-protected volume.

Upon its first launch, the DT Locker package on the protected volume will ask you to designate a password to be used henceforth to access the data storage area of the drive. After being provided with this, the software creates a secure file area which it then mounts on your computer as an additional drive, and which can be used just like any other USB external storage device. The difference is that as soon as the access software is exited, or the read/write volume ejected, the storage volume is dismounted and cannot be remounted without relaunching the DT Locker software and supplying the password once again.

Versions of the software are supplied on the device for WIndows 7 & 8, as well as for Mac OS X (it worked fine for me on all variants of OS X from 10.6.8 upwards) so there should be no problems using the device on any standard Windows or Mac OS computer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs work 26 April 2014
Size Name:64GB
This works, but not a smoothly as I would like. I have never yet been able to just plug this in to my laptop (Windows 8.1) and have it auto-start. I always have to manually launch the gateway software to get it to ask for my password and open the encrypted part of the drive. Add to this the fact that it appears to have corrupted some video files I stored on it; and that the plastic liner for the cap (presumably for insulation?) fell out after the third use, I really can't give it more than three stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 23 April 2014
Size Name:16GB|Verified Purchase
When I looked at it online it didn't look the most attractive to be honest. Although when it arrived and I got it out of the horrible and super annoying packaging (still using the plastic where you need to awkwardly cut around the edges) it actually looked really nice. It's made out of aluminium so it will withhold small knocks and bumps. When I plugged it in I thought it would go through a complicated, complex system of keeping the device locked but it was a really nice efficient system that was really easy to use. I love the build quality of this, I have a SanDisk Extreme 32gb USB 3 that cost me just over 32 but I was worried about it breaking after using it a lot as it's very "plasticy," although it's meant to be one of the best USB 3's out I still feel more secure using my Data Traveller not only because it has a lock but because of the aluminium body. Overall, just buy it, it's amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says 30 April 2014

Size Name:16GB|Verified Purchase
Pkugged into a USB2 on a windows eight machine in hope rather than expectation. It Autoran!!. It asked several questions language and password and hint then set the disk up. Pulled it out plugged it in and it worked requesting the password and gave me access. rather slow boot up about 15 seconds,. It works next I will try on the USB three on windows seven and then on work machines. Initial impressions are good. for the software.

The memory stick is metal covered and is a good weight. The cap is a bit stiffl and fits on the base of the stick I think the finish is brushed aluminium. All in all pleased so far as long as it will transfer data without too much hassle and defensible security. Pleased so far with function, finish and price

5.0 out of 5 stars Problem Solved. 4 Aug 2014
By Ian
Size Name:32GB|Verified Purchase
Windows PCs at work; Macs at home. Secure file storage and transfer via portable memory has been a hassle for years - I don't know why I hadn't found this product before, but it works perfectly. Encryption is processed on the Flash Drive rather than via the Mac/PC, file transfer speeds are excellent, and the device feels weighty/robust for its size.

An excellent product.

I use the ordinary Kingston flash drives and have been quite happy with them so with this in mind and the good reviews off other buyers I chose to buy a secure locker one the same make to use with my Windows 7 computer. It came this morning and I plugged it in, the drivers loaded straight away. For someone that is a bit of a technophobe pensioner even I found it straight forward to load a password for it etc and load it up. It does actually load you instructions of how to do it when plugged in anyway. I found loading items on to it pretty quick and ejecting the drive safely afterwards was just a case of clicking the icon that's left automatically in the hidden icons tray when running and removing it from the USB port. Very speedy delivery from Kikatec too thankyou.
