Review

Praise for Fiona McIntosh:

‘It’s a “just one more chapter” sort of book. Don’t start reading in the evening if you have to get up early the next morning’
Robin Hobb

Product Description

The third, and last, instalment of Fiona McIntosh’s gripping epic fantasy, set in a world torn by revenge, love and ancient magic

Loethar the Tyrant has established himself as the King of the Devona Set. No longer seen as a tyrant, his reforms and peace-making efforts have won over a section of society, especially since over the last 15 years, his people from the steppes have migrated and integrated into the Devona kingdoms.

Loethar no longer believes Prince Leo, the rightful heir to the throne, to be dead and hunts him and his outlaw allies; but another heir also exists - one the usurper should fear more than a prince on the run… and she has possession of the ancient Valisar enchantment.

Having learnt the truth of her parentage, her world and her family’s fate, she must decide whether to stay and face the King’s wrath, or escape back into the world she has hidden within for so many years.

Unlike the other reviewers, I felt totally let down by this book. Especially the way the character of Leo developed (or failed to) in the light of the events toward the end of the first book in the series. Twists in the plot are one thing: for example as we the readers come to understand the "aegis" magic, then some of the actions taken by Loethar especially towards Brennus in the first book become understandable. However the direction taken by Leo, especially after he is confirmed by Cyrena at the end of the first book, are NOT a "plot twist", they are a breach of the implied contract between the author and the reader.

(The concept that there is an implied contract between author and reader is made in several books about writing, see Characters and Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card among others.)

Having read and enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy, I was immensely pleased when I noticed this book sat on the shelves at Perth airport with a 24 hours trip back to the UK ahead of me. To say that I was disappointed in this book is an understatement. I have so far managed to claw my way through the first half, and am now seriously debating whether to bother finishing it, and after reading other reviews I may just stop now. I don't understand what happened with this series as the first two were strong works, but the plot has been lost, the writing has become uninspired, the inconsistencies are just plain annoying, and I would expect more from an Author who is writing their 12th novel. A real shame.

King's Wrath 9 Nov 2010

Format:Hardcover
This book was not as good as the first two in the series, some of the romantic pairings were unexpected and disappointing As was the change in characterisation of a key character. Still, a fast paced, entertaining book, perfect for a lazy weekend or on the tube before and after work.
Ultimately the book was OK, but it had the potential to be much better than it was. 3/5
Amazon were really fantastic about the delivery though.

Great end to a fantastic trilogy
This trilogy actually got better as it went along. Kept me guessing until the end - and still a few unanswered questions to keep the imagination going.

This book trammelled me
Definitely an insipid ending as this book just gasps over the line. The previous books were much more engaging, whilst this final installment lacks credibility. Read more

Excellent end to the trilogy
I really enjoyed this trilogy - Fiona McIntosh is an excellent writer. This book ends everything off nicely and is a good conclusion.
