Book Description

1 Oct 2006

'Kings and Things' was first published in 1937 as a light-hearted romp through British History to be read by parents to their children 'in the Story Hour which so often precedes the tragic necessity of "going to bed."' H E Marshall, best known for her classic history, 'Our Island Story', takes us through the story of the British monarchs from the Roman times to the present day with a light, humorous touch which should appeal as much to the adults as to the children.

Kings and Things Key Benefits:

- The lively and humorous narrative makes this an ideal read for children

- The light-hearted presentation of historical events will capture children's imaginations

- The perfect gift for any child!

Product Description

Review

When I say that my children 10, 9 and 7, want to go to bed in order to hear the latest chapter, I am not exaggerating. This is in no doubt their favourite book of all time and is not only an excellent story but a great opportunity to dip in to, to answer any awkward questions that are asked of us! Short chapters and brief paragraphs make it enjoyable even for my 7 year old to pick up. A great family favourite and a smashing gift for all. --Amazon review

I have just spent an afternoon in a thrilling world. A world of Top Nations and Great Rulers. Of Wicked Knights and Ordinary People. A place of Troubles and Bothers and Goings-On. Where there are Good Men and Bad Men and Kings go Rampaging and Conquering and winning Big Battles and lots of Glory against Enemies. I inhaled almost the whole thing in one sitting. All school librarians should present their charges with the same opportunity. --Damien Whitworth, Times 2 - 6 Nov 2006

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic journey down memory lane 18 Sep 2007
Format:Hardcover
I read this book as a child, which led to my interest in History. I was delighted when I rediscovered this book on Amazon and spent many hours reading through the 'stories'. I would recommend this to anyone wishing to relive their literary childhood and also to read to your own children.

When I heard that Stephen Fry liked this book, I knew I had to see it. And no wonder - it's fantastic, and the cartoons are amazing. All my Christmas present worries this year are at an end!

5.0 out of 5 stars almost as good as our island story 26 Jan 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this to go with our island story and it does repeat a little of what is in our Island story but adds more info about the person being described so it's pretty good really. Im doing a chapter from one then the coordinating chapter in the other.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Romp Through English History 26 May 2013

I read this when I was in junior high. Reading it again after so many years was enjoyable. The author provides a great deal of information in a way children can understand but adults can also relate to.
5.0 out of 5 stars The History of Britain from the Romans until the Queens Father 8 Oct 2013
By ezzywave - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
this is an outstanding book which helps explain how this country reached where it was in 1937 although it would be very easy to bring it up to date.
it explains the complicated goings on during Roman Britain and after in Saxon Britain onto the Normans and so on. Its style is very easy for a 7 - 10 year old to appreciate and my children do. My father gave me his copy when I was 9. My father was given his copy when he was 9, back in 1948 by my grandfather and grandmother after the difficult WW2 period when my father did not see his father because he was away fighting with the RAF.
Highly recommended.
