This retro collection of the original adventure / hidden object game is a fascinating history lesson. Hours of entertainment here, but you really need to know the following...
* Press F2 to switch off the "music".
* Press Esc and the arrow keys to see what other commands are available to you.
* You can move around the screens using the mouse (except games 2 and 3) or the arrow keys. The mouse is best when moving within a screen. The keys are best when moving off a screen. Press a key twice to stop moving.
* You actually type in commands (!) like "look in water". Usually only two words are required ("look" on its own is also useful). Useful verbs are "get", "use", "open".
* Save regularly, i.e. whenever you discover a new object or move through a difficult section.
* You will need to create your own map unless you have astonishing spatial awareness, either using pen and paper, or by taking screenshots. Screenshots only worked for me when running the software in a window. To do this you can create a shortcut with the following targets (may only work on Windows XP and earlier) ideally run minimized
"C:\Program Files\Sierra\King's Quest Collection(TM)\dosbox-0.63\dosbox.exe" C:\PROGRA~1\Sierra\KING'S~1\kq1sci\sierra.com -exit
"C:\Program Files\Sierra\King's Quest Collection(TM)\dosbox-0.63\dosbox.exe" C:\PROGRA~1\Sierra\KING'S~1\kq2\sierra.com -exit
"C:\Program Files\Sierra\King's Quest Collection(TM)\dosbox-0.63\dosbox.exe" C:\PROGRA~1\Sierra\KING'S~1\kq3\sierra.com -exit
etc.
* Game 1 is the revamped version, so plays like game 4. Games 2 and 3 feel a lot older by comparison.
* The last page of the game 4 manual tells you how to enter passwords to start using it.
* Game 7 demonstrates how great graphics do not actually make a game any more enjoyable.
* Search the web for Kings Quest Hints when you get really stuck, which you almost certainly will. Persevere first, but without hints (not cheats) the games can be really frustrating. It appears that in 30 years adventure games have not really changed all that much.
