Book Description

16 Jun 2011 The Stormlight Archive Book One

Released in two volumes due to size of book.

According to mythology mankind used to live in The Tranquiline Halls. Heaven. But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms. And the Voidbringers followed . . .

They came against man ten thousand times. To help them cope, the Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, known as Shardblades. Led by ten angelic Heralds and ten orders of knights known as Radiants, mankind finally won.

Or so the legends say. Today, the only remnants of those supposed battles are the Shardblades, the possession of which makes a man nearly invincible on the battlefield. The entire world is at war with itself - and has been for centuries since the Radiants turned against mankind. Kings strive to win more Shardblades, each secretly wishing to be the one who will finally unite all of mankind under a single throne.

On a world scoured down to the rock by terrifying hurricanes that blow through every few days is a young spearman ,forced into the army of a Shardbearer, led to war against an enemy he doesn't understand and doesn't really want to fight.

What happened deep in mankind's past?

Why did the Radiants turn against mankind, and what happened to the magic they used to wield?

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID! 1 July 2011
Format:Paperback
This is not a book review but a warning. I have read this author's previous work so bought The Way of Kings & TWoK book2 at the same time. Only to discover I had bought the whole of the book and a separate book comprising of the 2nd half of the book also. I wrongly assumed that book 2 was a follow on book, it is not. I accept I have made a dumb mistake and the cost is minimal but, i hope this prevents anyone else repeating it. In short buy part 1 and part 2 collectively or the whole book independantly.
(The book is fab though and well worth the extra regardless, another triumph by Mr Sanderson)

1.0 out of 5 stars Part Two of what? 15 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I am a huge fan of Brandon Sanderson. His "Mistborn" books are seriously well written, wonderful entertainment and a joy to read.
Similarly, "The Way of Kings" is an epic tale, told with a fine eye for highly original detail, good strong and well drawn characters, wonderful story telling, a host of plots and a scope to rival George R R Martin's "A Song of Ice And Fire" sequence. Powerful stuff and recommended unreservedly. Brandon Sanderson is at the top of his game.
Imagine my frustration and annoyance then, having finished 'Archive Book One' and eagerly picking up the very much smaller "Book Two", only to find myself reading the same book all over again but in a much reduced form. Thumbing through chapter after chapter in a fruitless search for some fresh material that I hadn't already just read.
Disappointment doesn't begin to describe it. The publishers presentation of this second book gives every impression that this is the follow up. It is not. The lack of any kind of indication on the cover is, to put it politely, regrettable.
If you have bought the first book, a very large and heavy tome, then you will have read the entire offering, do not buy this book as you will be wasting your money.
However, I still can't wait for the "real" book two and I am 'fascinated' to know what Brandon Sanderson and his publishers will actually call it.
