Product Description

No instrument offers as much diversity within jazz circles as the guitar, as this album would confirm. It was Django Reinhardt (together with Stéphane Grappelli) who first promoted the idea of a lead guitar, backed by rhythm guitars (and without percussion) in jazz, an idea that was eagerly adopted by many other musicians. Charlie Christian, meanwhile, was an innovator in the field of electric guitar, and once again it was an introduction that captivated many other musicians as well as the audience. This album gathers together many of the innovators and leading exponents of the jazz guitar, resulting in 16 tracks of pure magic.

Not being very familiar with jazz I thought this compilation was fairly broad and well priced and I was pleasantly suprised at the content.

This is a very nice compilation, which contains a mixture of well-known and more obscure tracks, and includes solos, duets and ensembles (although you wouldn't guess that from the details available under the MP3 download). The musicians were all pioneers of jazz guitar, none more so than Eddie Lang who, it's believed, led the switch from banjo when electrical recording came in, and Charlie Christian, who introduced the electric guitar (not altogether an unmitigated blessing!) It dates from 1995, when a running time of less than hour was the norm, but it's let down by the lack of any background information.
