5.0 out of 5 stars PERSONAL INSIGHTS INTO THE CHESS TITANS, 19 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Kings of Chess (Hardinge Simpole chess classics) (Paperback)
william winter was a chess master and one time british chess champion-he was also on one occasion incredibly jailed for sedition! in this book he gives his personal reminiscences of the great champions of the first half of the 20th century-lasker , capablanca, alekhine, euwe and botvinnik, as well as such challengers as janowski and bogolyubov whom winter knew well. this is a charming and instructive book to read- a real pleasure when so many modern chess books are just reams of moves and variations. in this book the personalities truly come to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Synopsis, 6 July 2007
This review is from: Kings of Chess (Hardinge Simpole chess classics) (Paperback)
William Winter, the only British chess champion ever to be arrested and imprisoned for sedition, was one of the more colourful characters of the British chess menagerie - an international master and chess correspondent both for the Manchester Guardian and the Daily Worker. He combined his revolutionary views away from the game with a fine clear writing style and impeccably classical strategies over the board.
