I can always remember at the age of about fourteen buying , with the money I earned from doing two paper rounds , a book on football history and being astonished at the rich annals and the great legacy the game had to offer . I still have that book but if you want a new more contemporary version then you could do worse than look at the Kingfisher Football Encyclopaedia.
Bear in mind though that the book is aimed at young adults. It is not a serious chronological account of the game or a studious study of football's rise to global brand and sociological phenomenon. Rather it give's a potted history of the game, players, countries and clubs paying special attention in this world cup year to that abiding tournament. But the book also covers , in a rather spurious manner it must be said ,skills and tactics. There are even chapters dedicated to stadiums, supporters and the business side of the game.
There are lot's of photographs , plenty of stats and an interesting resurgence of the diagrams portraying great goals-though there are not enough of them and the choice is bizarrely random -no Maradona goal against England but one of a little known club goal; scored by Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he played for Ajax .The book is deliberately biased for the modern game so the games vivid and vital history is given pretty short shrift but there may be just enough to pique the interest of some young fans to find out more.
It is also the sort of book easily skipped in and out of. Ideal for those allergic to chunky chapters and great slabs of text. Plus there is a World Cup wall chart , and a very good one at that.

This colourful encyclopaedia will appeal to any football-mad boy or girl. Although it is a UK publication it is not especially biased towards British football and has plenty of information about players, teams and leagues from around the world. There are sections on game play, famous players, tactics, teams, the football industry and football cup competitions, including the forthcoming World Cup. To top it all off there's a glossy pull-out World Cup wall chart. What more could you want?

With a complimentary glossy wallchart for this year's World Cup, this encyclopedia would make a superb gift for a football-mad youngster and quite a few Dads too!
With tons of great colour illustrations covering the past 140 years of our national game, profiles of key players down the years, oodles of facts, trivia and statistics, this is a thorough and stylish tome that will keep any reader absorbed for hours; also extremely handy when preparing for a pub quiz!
The book has a dust jacket, and is well bound and fairly hefty. For the price it represents excellent value.

This is a very well presented encyclopedia of football. Perhaps encyclopedia is somewhat an exaggeration since it doesn't contain each and every available facts on the sport and its history, but for modern football and particularly younger fans, it provides a great visual and factual anthology of the sport, facts and figures, championships, well known players, and so on. It makes a very nice gift in my opinion.

Warmly recommended

For that football-crazy child who just can't get enough of the Beautiful Game. Simply and clearly written, profusely illustrated- it has much to recommend it. But it has dated very rapidly, and doesn't contain anything remarkable to recommend it beyond a typical football annual or any of the myriad World Cup cash-ins.
Good- but not great.

A well illustrated look at the history of world football that covers not only famous teams, players and managers but also touches on other related football issues, such as tactics, racism and womens football.
Of course as it is a global view there isn't room in the 144 pages (which includes the index) to cover every team, so of the British teams, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Celtic are singled out due to their European successes.
There's features on the World Cup, including a record of penalty shoot outs, England fans look away now; it also includes regional competitions like the European Championships, Olympics, Copa America etc.
As a nice extra, tucked away at the back is a World Cup 2010 pull out wall poster.
This is a pretty decent package for football fans to dip in an out of and the links to web addresses are a clever addition.

This is a fantastic football book, suitable for anyone over the age of about 12 as there is quite a lot of writing in it. It has loads of photos inside from various football events and tonnes of random footballing facts. There are sections on different clubs, countries and competitions, each with photos, facts, and descriptions. Included in the back is a World Cup wall chart so that you can track what's going on in the world cup. I recommend this to any football lover. All the information is presented in bite size chucks so it's perfect to pick up and and flick through without getting bored.

Really poor that Amazon are pushing a book for Christmas 2012 that was clearly designed to tie in to the 2010 World Cup.

There is a wall chart at the end of the book that readers are supposed to fill in as the World Cup progresses, entering the results of each match. Totally useless now the World Cup is over ...

Surely they should have sold all copies of this book off for 99p at the end of summer 2010?
