5.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you pay this Kingdom a visit... 31 July 2009
Set in a post-apocalyptic world, this graphic novel follows a pack of genetically created dog-like soldiers hunting an insectoid life form simply called "Them". Set in Antarctica, the last bastion of humanity in a world overrun by Them. The few remaining members of the human race are cryogenically frozen and woken sporadically to check their systems, while the packs keep Them at bay, recounting stories of the past that have been handed down from pack to pack.

Abnett has weaved an interesting mix of Aboriginal style storytelling with post-apocalyptic gloom. Strong imagery combines with strong characters for a gripping story. The main character is Gene the Hackman, alpha male leader of a pack that soon leaves him, making him an omega male (i.e. pack-less). It tells of his discovery of (and subsequent disillusionment with) one of their masters, a flabby, pale human. We then follow his quest to defeat Them, moving from Antartica across a land bridge to North America. Encountering tick-like creatures with telepathic powers, an entire village of humans that he protects from Them, and many more Them, Abnett and Elson's graphic novel gets off to a flying start and keeps the reader fully engaged throughout.
