Kingdom Hearts follows the story of a young boy named Sora whose home world is destroyed by darkness the the army of shadow creatures Heartless. When Sora awakes on a new world, separated from his friends Riku & Kairi and joins forces with Disney characters Donald & Goofy the three search various Disney themed worlds in search of Riku, Kairi & King Mickey in hope that they can stop the Heartless from consuming any more worlds.
Featuring cameos from many Final Fantasy & Disney characters, Kingdom Hearts is great for children & hardcore JRPG fans due to is generous difficulty curve & enchanting story.
The Limited Edition contains: Hardback Art Book Game Case signed by series creator.
With the announcement of KH2.5 next year, and KH3 on its way, this pack is absolutely essential for anyone who is not already familiar with the entire plot of the Kingdom Hearts series thus far.
First, since this is a review to the Limited Edition, it has an art book (which serves has BR case) with some art and comments (although not all of them are translated), it's nice to look at once, and advised just for fans who want to collect it.
Now for the game, it's divided in 3 games.
1st - The original (and first) Kingdom Hearts, which initiates the journey of Sora, Donald and Goofy throughout the Disney worlds (and one or two original ones), don't hold back just because this has Disney content on it (who didn't enjoy one or two disney movies when they were young?), the game has a good story, though it's about light and darkness and friendship (since we have Disney on this), it's a really well made story that makes use of nostalgia and the excellent soundtrack to play with our feelings.
The combat system is an innovative one of action-rpg, but the IA of donald and Goofy (your supporters in battle) isn't that great.
The art and animation is good, they managed to catch each of the disney worlds and their unique themes, and the characters are likable.
2nd - Kingdom Hearts ReCom, originally a game for GameBoy Advance, that suffered later an remake for PS2, changes the gameplay with a card system, it's an interesting system but it can be bothersome for those who want a full action rpg like the first game. It's one of the few liked games of the series.
3rd - Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, from the Nintendo DS, it's just remade has cutscenes for this HD collection. Around 2 hours of the events between the first and the second game.
In short, it doesn't has the best games of the series, but it's the one with the games that contain the important starting plot of the series.
The first Kingdom Hearts is a pretty decent game. Had it on the PS2, but never managed to complete it, so welcomed this chance to go through it again, and I actually completed it, yay!
Then there's Re:CoM - one that I tried on the GBA, but couldn't get into the controls, and was never released in the UK in its PS2 re-release, so this was a good chance to play this, too. The story is pretty decent, but I'm not a fan of the combat.
Finally, 358/2 Days, this one just being a compilation of the DS game's cutscenes, and other important info to tell that story.
KH comes first, Re:CoM and 358/2 run at the same time (they each focus on a different set of characters, but there is a lot of overlap, as Re:CoM deals with Sora's (and Riku's) journey through Castle Oblivion, a place run by the mysterious Organisation XIII. 358/2 focuses on Roxas, the "nobody" of Sora, who is a part of the Organisation, and deals with his relationship with the other Organisation members, as well as giving reference to the events of Re:CoM (whilst the members with an important role in Re:CoM go to Castle Oblivion, they don't take part in any of the story events in 358/2, as they're not around to take part, so going through the 358 stuff is helped with prior knowledge of Re:CoM's events
The Limited Edition also came with a pretty nice case and mini-artbook, showcasing a variety of pieces of artwork, including a few concept art pieces, and I quite like it as an addition to the collection.
Overall, 1.5 HD ReMIX is a nice compilation, looking forward to 2.5's release, and then 3 hopefully shan't be too much longer away!
