A magnificent book in all aspects; the story enchants and the illustrations are a joy. Buy it, read it then read it slowly again to be transported back to your childhood. Go ahead - because you're worth it !

The Greatest Victory

Buy this book. Ostensibly a children's tale, the Swan Lake trilogy is a work of infinite depth at once accessible to the young and more adult than 99% of the offerings on this website. Here is a beautiful statement about all that is wrong with the modern world and all that can be made right. Mr. Van Allsburg's art is as polished as the prose and, frankly, this reviewer is not possessed of the skill to do justice to the book. It is that good--it should be in your library.

I faulted myself for wishful thinking, and I told myself that even were I not imagining this sound, its significance would lie only in what I wished rather than in what was. There are certain great and beautiful things that to all appearances find defeat in this world. All proof, all reason, show them to have fallen, and as often as not our hope is merely our punishment. But in this world there are as well wrenching and great surprises that take us beyond what we can reason and what we can prove.

If Mark Helprin writes it, I read it. There is no other writer I know of with such brilliant imagination and stellar use of language. Presumably these books were written for children, perhaps up to age 90!!! Multiple readings of Helprin fiction are commonplace here. If you like great stories, well told, these are among the best. I only wish I could entice the author to write more of them. I own everything he has written in book form. Don't miss this one!

Another glorious Calla Edition

I own several of the Calla Edition books and they are pure delight, a must-have for any serious collector. When I received this book, I was thrilled to peruse the beautiful full-color plates, all 42 of them, illustrated by one of my favorite illustrators, Chris Van Allsburg (who gave us such quirky, wonderful reads such as Jumanji, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, The Widow's Broom, The Sweetest Fig, etc.)
This book contains three novellas, i.e. Swan Lake, A City in Winter, and The Veil of Snows by Mark Helprin. Potential buyers need to be aware that this is the second Calla Edition, bound in Arrestox B Navy Vellum (the signed, limited First Edition in bound in dark blue Tocca Vivella, with matching slipcase). This second edition comes with a dust jacket. The paper is of superior quality stock, in a pleasing ivory color, and feels almost like card stock. The price offered here on Amazon is very affordable considering how exquisite this book is! I have yet to be disappointed in any of the Calla Editions.
