One of the most influential bands of the electronic 80s seems to be stuck in the sound of the 90s that found their record sales declining, whether they work together or go solo. Gahan's single version here is the best of the bunch, but is reminiscent of industrial/Nine Inch Nails sounds the band was going for post-Violator. Problem is, with so many fantastic remixers out there bringing 80s dance vibes to modern music, members of Depeche fail to bring those talents to breathe new life into their new music. "Kingdom" could have had an amazing electro/dance mix, but here, the closest we get is the digitalism remix, which has a driving beat and funky synths but fails to stand out melodically. The Booka Shade mix has a pretty moody world in my eyes/policy of truth feel, but doesn't focus much on Dave's vocals. And the K10 extended mix is a downtempo mix that is pretty much just a longer version of the single mix. Just as I did with the last Depeche CD, I will wait patiently for one single after another to be released, hoping that ONE remix will bring back the magic that members of Depeche Mode created. Because this first single is just plodding monotony.
