The CHIC Organization rules again!,
By whitesocked funker (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: King Of The World (International Version) (Audio CD)
This is one of the classic albums produced by the CHIC organization (Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers) for other artists. The album features all of the players and singers known from Chic's own albums, as well as those they produced for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross and others. Tony Thompson is there with his trademark drumsound, Nile and Bernard play their funky guitar and bass and original Chic singers Alfa Anderson, Luci Martin, Fonzi Thornton and Michelle Cobbs provide backup vocals.
The album was especially commissioned in 1980 for French singer Sheila (so Miss Ross was never in the picture for this release), who had had some international success the previous year with her disco-style "Singin In The Rain" album. Edwards/Rodgers weren't too sure how to handle this project and neither was Sheila- you can tell she has no clue what she is actually singing about in some cases. Nevertheless, it is a great album that deserved to be rereleased on CD. It had previously only been released in France and has been very sought after by Chic fans. So if you are a fan of the Chic sound, you can't go wrong with this album. Though not the best Chic Organization production, it does contain several classic tracks, but it is definitely worth for the full length version of "Spacer" alone which remains one of the best Chic-penned songs ever.

The reissue of a forgotten gem !,
By A Customer
This review is from: King Of The World (International Version) (Audio CD)
Better known as the "Spacer" album from Sheila.B Devotion. Originally issued in 1979, this cult LP is finally available ! Produced by the CHIC team for the most popular French female singer . It is not 100 % Disco music, some of the tracks are more Rock-Disco oriented. The original version of "Spacer" (a worldwide hit) is a pure gem and still a classic floor-filler. Best cuts: "Don't go", "King of the world", "Your love is good", "Cover girls" and "Charge plates and credit cards".Diana Ross was initially planned for this LP but for an obscure contract reason, she switched it for the "Upside down" project which was originally planned for Sheila ! It is said David Bowie decided to work with CHIC on the "Let's dance" LP after he heard this unbelievable record. This LP is timeless, go for it!

UK vs. french release?,
By The Avenger (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: King Of The World (International Version) (Audio CD)
This CD is the original album. The UK version has the original 8 tracks. However the French version has extra tracks (remixes of "spacer" plus the US promo mix of "your love is good" and uses the master tapes held by warner music France so sounds better) and is available from amazon. fr. The album was produced by Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards of Chic and has the distinct chic-sound. Rodgers has said that french record label carrere approached him and asked if he could boost the career of top french singer Sheila, particularly in the english market, where she had had a disco hit with "Singin in the rain". As Rodgers & Edwards were just doing the same thing in the US with Sister Sledge (the "we are family" album) they agreed. They used the album to experiment with a more rock sound, hence the rock-feel to some of the songs. However, though some of the songs are OK (charge plates and credit cards/cover girls) they don't match the panache of "spacer" which is the only hit single. Still it is a must buy for anyone who loves the Chic-sound
