This Colin Dann book follows the story of Sammy the domestic tabby cat. Born into a life of safety and comfort, Sammy has a restless and adventurous nature and yearns for more than a life of dometic bliss. From his vantage point in the apple tree in his garden he spots an area of waste ground in the distance and his curiosity is aroused. As Sammy grows he begins to wander further afield and finds that the wasteland is home to a bunch of stray cats (the vagabonds)led by the vicious leader Brute and his cohorts including the manipulative Pinky, Brute's favourite female and a number of strong males who are pretenders to the throne. Sammy is trapped between his desire and intrigue for a more exciting life and the safety of his homelife. What will Sammy choose and is he equipped for the harsh realities of life with the vagabonds?
As usual with Dann's novels he gives all his animal characters human characteristics we recognise so well which really brings the story to life.
I was captivated by his novels as a child and I would highly recommend this one. A great story, great characters and a guilty pleasure of mine to this day. Dann's use of language makes it a great read even for the more mature reader. Snap up a copy, it's a very valuable part of my collection
