BBC Review

Since acquiring the label in 2001, Sanctuary have mined the rich seam of the Trojan back catalogue. The lively reissue schedule continues apace with a round-up of King Tubby's mid-seventies dub remixes, many of which have never been released outside Jamaica.

Given Tubby's prodigious output any retrospectives claim to be definitive is a bit dubious, but these tracks most deifintely come from the golden period of dub. This collectionfeatures a host of greats including Augustus Pablo, Dillinger and Lee Perry's The Upsetters.

Tubby'sstory is remarkable and mirrors that of an extraordinary period in reggae music. From hi-fi repairman to dub pioneer, he tinkered and reconfigured his equipment and, in so doing, redefined the role of engineer-producer. His trademark touches are everywhere - these tracks zoom in and out of focus, as skittering hi-hats and loping bass-lines are picked out of a fug of reverb. They sound as vibrant today as they would have snaking out of the Tannoy speakers chained to the wall of Tubby's Waterhouse studio.

Naturally, these radical re-works bear scant relation to the originals, yet the quality of the playing still shines through. The ska horns on the Upsetter's classic "Freak Out Skank" remain irrepressibly joyous even after they've been through Tubby's dub mangler. Likewise, Dillinger's vocal floats disembodied over "Dub Organiser" to the accompaniment of skeletal brass - a fragmentary relic of the original.

This is a compelling document that will amply reward even the casual dub archaeologist. --James Cowdery

This fantastic two cd issue from Trojan is a must have for any dub fan. Spanning the evolution of dub between 1972-77, this cd features some of Tubbys finest works. Both CDs chart a journey through the amzing mixes created by king tubby and showcases his distinctive mixing style. The stand out track for me being the title track 'King Tubby's in Fine Stile' and the Augustus Pablo produced 'The Big Rip off' which features a seriously infectious peice of drumming enhanced by tubbys filters and delays with Pablo's floating melodica lines drifting in and out. As i've said, this is a fantastic Trojan issue which comes highly recommended.

This is excellent dub reggae, like it used to be in the 1970s and 1980s.

BRILLIANT 22 Jan. 2005
By J. Brady - Published on

The highlight of the year 2004, for me, was sitting on the beach in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, spliffed out of my mind, and listening to King Tubby's In Fine Style with earphones, for the first time. I have been digging deeper and deeper into dub reggae for the last few years, always looking for something new ( at least new to me ) and exciting. The young lady at the music store in Jamaica recommended this highly to me, and am I ever glad I took her advice and bought this collection of dub grooves. King Tubby was an innovator, a seer of the future. When you think about it, his practice of stripping a song down to its bare essentials, then adding and removing parts, bits of toasting, sound effects, and echo laden, often ghostly vocals, is EXACTLY what modern day remixers are doing with electronic dance music. Although most of the tracks on this collection have that very distinctively analogue sound ( "tape hiss" that can never be removed completely ) they sound incredibly fresh, and light years ahead of their time. Highly recommended for fans of dub reggae.

bedroom rock 27 Oct. 2005

this is an excellent collection of King Tubby's studio work from 1972-1977. every track displays Tubby's brilliance with mixing, re-arranging, and remixing these great reggae platters into classy and timeless dubs. King Tubby's understanding of space and sound is astonishing and it's so humbling to think that almost all of these great versions were done in his small bedroom apartment (and on shoddy, sub-standard equipment, too, i might add).

one note of interest is that King Tubby was an avid lover of not just reggae, but of jazz. and that improvisational spirit of jazz is felt so strongly in the way that he works in the studio. he takes a song's theme, rearranges it's parts and therefore taking it to a whole new level, and then bringing it back to it's stated purpose. it's really like he was extending the personality of a song and allowing it to grow and to be molded into one of his own. truly, amazing skill.

there are so many highlights on this collection, so it would be exhaustive to delve into my personal favorites; suffice it to say, that this is a well represented document of the founding father of dub music. a classic collection that no fan of old reggae/dub music should go without hearing.

New Style 22 Mar. 2011

This collection is easily the best introduction to both dub in general and to king tubby's dub specifically. It shows definitely that tubby was not only 20 years ahead of his time, but that he was also a musician and an artist in his own right. I personally have a great affinity for album, for the times I've spent with it, and for the times it transported me to a place beyond my immediate surroundings, both physically and metaphysically. I encourage everyone interested in dub or general `island sounds' to pick this up asap.
