Book Description

16 Aug 2012 The Broken Empire (Book 2)

The second book in the Broken Empire series, Lawrence takes his young anti-hero one step closer to his grand ambition.

To reach greatness you must step on bodies, and many brothers lie trodden in my wake. I’ve walked from pawn to player and I’ll win this game of ours, though the cost of it may drown the world in blood…

The land burns with the fires of a hundred battles as lords and petty kings fight for the Broken Empire. The long road to avenge the slaughter of his mother and brother has shown Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath the hidden hands behind this endless war. He saw the game and vowed to sweep the board. First though he must gather his own pieces, learn the rules of play, and discover how to break them.

A six nation army, twenty thousand strong, marches toward Jorg's gates, led by a champion beloved of the people. Every decent man prays this shining hero will unite the empire and heal its wounds. Every omen says he will. Every good king knows to bend the knee in the face of overwhelming odds, if only to save their people and their lands. But King Jorg is not a good king.

Faced by an enemy many times his strength Jorg knows that he cannot win a fair fight. But playing fair was never part of Jorg’s game plan.

Review

Praise for Prince of Thorns:

‘Dark and relentless, Prince of Thorns will pull you under and drown you in story. A two-in-the-morning page turner. Absolutely stunning… jaw-dropping’
ROBIN HOBB

‘Excellent – on a par with George R.R. Martin’
CONN IGGULDEN

‘[A] morbidly gripping, gritty fantasy tale.’
Publishers Weekly

‘Without a doubt the most original and most memorable fantasy debut of 2011. It’s difficult to imagine how another book could top this one.’

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read 20 Aug 2012
Format:Hardcover
This was a fantastic, well-written book. It shows the depth and progression of Jorg as he takes up his role of King. The only downside was that, at times, the narrative was a bit harder to follow than in Prince of Thorns, as one of main premises of the book was that Jorg had lost a part of his memory. However, saying that, it was still a fantastic read and if you enjoyed Prince of Thorns, this is a fantastic continuation of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page-turner 12 May 2013
By Chilari
Format:Paperback
A very enjoyable read. Jorg's narration is as compelling as the first book in the series, and his growth as a character is well demonstrated. Pacing is once more spot on, and information relevant to the plot is revealed at exactly the right time. Asides and tangents, while common, keep the story moving forward and don't feel like exposition. Worldbuilding is as strong as in the predecessor, with little hints and clues revealed entirely naturally.

The only weakness I can detect is perhaps in the characterisation of side characters. While narrator Jorg's characterisation is absolutely perfect, that of other characters is occasionally lacking.

The prose is strong and kept me turning pages, sometimes without noticing time passing - I went to sleep about two hours later than I should have on two consecutive evenings and needed extra coffee at work as a result.

This isn't a book review in the generic sense. I'm not giving both sides of an argument in what was good, bad or potentially could have been done better, with this book. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, not the best.
Follows on well from the first one. This book has some epic moments but at times the details of Jorg's inner turmoil overtake the importance of current events.
