I'm no geologist, so, for me, this was not just the story of one man breaking new scientific boundaries to discover how mountains and valleys were formed, but a social history told through the adventures of a scientist who not only foraged around rock faces in the likes of Wales in the course of his investigations. He also travelled in Europe and met with its leading personalities at a time when post-Napoleonic France had returned to the Bourbons, serfdom was still entrenched in Russia, Germany had still to be formed, and the Hapsburg Empire was being challenged both from without and within. A fascinating read and a labour of love by the author.
