Product Description

Product Description

• The second set in Ace's in-depth look at Little Willie John’s influential singles for the King label. The first release was ‘The Early Sessions’ (CDCHD 846).

• The hits here include ‘Talk To Me, Talk To Me,’ ‘Leave My Kitten Alone,’ ‘Sleep’ and ‘Heartbreak (It’s Hurtin’ Me)’ with 20 other ‘A’ and ‘B’ sides from 1958-1960, including the Mod / R&B club monster ‘I’m Shakin’’.

• Once again, Bill Dahl, author of ‘Motown: The Golden Years,’ has written the note based on first-hand interviews, this time with Willie’s sister Mable John, songwriter Billy Myles, and Motown legend Lamont Dozier.

• Dozier spoke of Little Willie John in particularly glowing terms: "The guy was just incredible. His voice, and what he did with a song – it was believable, and he knew how to touch you with a song, and knew how to raise the hair on the back of your neck."

• This releases shows just why Little Willie John is such a cult figure as he tackles everything from rocking R&B to sensitive blues ballads, even pop standards on the cusp of the soul era.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE 2nd INSTALLMENT OF LITTLE WILLIE JOHN'S KING RECORDINGS! 23 Aug 2007
By Mr. Nightshift - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This one picks up where the "Early Years" left off. Includes the hits "Talk To Me, Talk To Me", "Tell It Like It Is", "Leave My Kitten Alone", "Heartbreak" & "Sleep", ALL from source Masters! On the down side at least 4 of these tracks were recorded in Stereo!, but appear in Mono on this collection...For the money we pay for serious money for some of these collections, you'd figure we would get what was recorded in Stereo, IN STEREO!, but such is life. I guess to make up for that the good folks at Ace Records provided us with very informative Liner Notes. Let's see what the 3rd Installment will bring, and let's hope we won't have to wait too long.
4.0 out of 5 stars Review of "The King Sessions 1958-1960" 10 April 2011
By Cecelia Faigin - Published on Amazon.com

I believe I already reviewed this! However, I'll repeat what I previously said. I ordered this CD because I'm a big fan of Little Willie John's voice and style. (His is the best version of "Fever"-sorry, Peggy Lee fans!) This particular CD had two songs I really enjoy and wanted to add to my collection ("My Love" and "I'm Shakin'") Other than those, most of the songs, in my opinion, are rather pedestrian 50's love songs. For big fans of this great artist, they will probably enjoy "The King Sessions 1958-1960". I'm glad to own it, but I wish the quality of most of the songs was better.
