The heart-warming story of a 12-year-old boy struggling through life in the American Midwest during the Great Depression of the 1930s. With his mother in hospital with tuberculosis and his father having to take to the road as a travelling salesman, Aaron (Jesse Bradford) is forced to learn some valuable life lessons when he ends up fending for himself in a rundown St. Louis hotel.

This is possibly "Oceans Eleven" director Steven Soderbergh's finest film. Set in depression-era America, it paints a vivid picture of the period, and of the various characters in eleven year-old Aaron Kurlander's life. Aaron, wonderfully played by Jesse Bradford, finds himself living alone in a seedy St. Louis hotel due to family circumstances, and having to survive by his wits. It's the story of a young boy's perseverance in the face of almost overwhelming adversity. But yes, there's a happy ending. It's a shame this movie has never been released on DVD in the United States.

From director Steven Soderbergh this film is set in the heart of America's depression. It charts the story of an eleven year-old boy Aaron Kurlander. Aaron (played by Jesse Bradford), is one of lifes winners not quitters. Though poor, he lives alone in a seedy St.Lois hotel and escapes one debt after the next by a combination of hard graft, luck and ingenuity. He perseveres in the face of almost overwhelming adversity and, even though the film is wrapped up with a rather predictable 'happy ending', it is a very entertaining watch. Okay I'll admit that I only bought this to complete my Katherine Heigl film collection (she's in it three or four times for about 10 seconds at a time and has a minor speaking part), in this her second film. That having been said it ia well worth a view, good value for money and, if you're into period drama, then it's worth getting in my opinion.

Lovely little film of days gone by. Managed to stir the emotions when needed although a tad contrived in places. Definitely worth a watch.

Enjoyed it… though somewhat dated and actors too old for characters.
