B.B. King's music always inspires an emotional reaction in the listener and this album is no different. However that reaction at first probably is along the lines of: "What the hell is this?" and "Where is his unmistakable guitar sound?" But when you get past that (and learn to skip a few of the tracks... kind of like Clapton's "Pilgrim" album) there is enough to catch and keep your attention.

There's a lot going on here. Too much. Almost every track is swamped with 1980s keyboard flourishes of the washy and tinkly kind and the whole thing sounds busy and way over-produced. Mr. King's guitar is often missing, hidden, treated or just plain lost but when it does surface (eg Let's Straighten It Out) it sings just like always. The man himself is in good voice throughout and listening you just want to strip the production back so the natural charm can shine through. It is a recording of its time and heaven knows, he's not the only artist to have a go at bringing their music 'up to date' with the trends of the time. Given all that I don't mind the album and enjoy hearing it from time to time but if you are new to Mr. King and want something typical this is certainly not the place to start. The stellar backing musicians are for the most part lost in the mix and that's a shame when you look at who is involved here: Bonnie Raitt; Mick Fleetwood; Steve Cropper; Tom Scott; Stevie Nicks; The Muscle Shoals Horns and others. Strip the keyboard and drum machine programming away, re-mix what's left, perhaps add a little piano and/or organ and hey, this would be a killer!

Wow, when i first heard this cd in 89 i liked a couple songs but thought it sounded too modern. Now that I'm older {lol} even though i realize it's not what fans of B.B. might be used to but this is for sure a classic. The first three songs rock out! My God, Stevie Nicks doing background on Can't Get Enough Of Your Love alone makes this cd worth the purchase. She is so prominant it's almost like a duet. With guests as Stevie, Bonnie Raitt, Mick Fleetwood and others this is a cd not to be missed, no B.B. King catalogue would be complete without this under appreciated, overlooked classic. Don not overlook this underrated B.B. king cd.
