Kanda Bongo Man is a giant of African music and the artist credited with introducing

John Peel to African music. His fans number Vampire Weekend (“Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”), Paul Simon and John Peel.

All the tracks were recorded for Joe Boyd’s Hannibal records between 1984-91, an

era we can look back on today as the high watermark of Parisian soukous, and

showcase a band at the height of their powers.

Behind his soaring voice Kanda employed Diblo Dibala and Rigo Star, two lead guitarists

who are widely considered as the best soukous guitarists who ever lived.

Diblo was recruited from the band led by the legendary Franco whilst Rigo’s scorching

licks graced albums by Paul Simon and it was their twinning that gave Kanda’s music

a wonderfully joyous, ringing quality. They both feature extensively on the “King of

Kwassa Kwassa”.

This 2CD set features tracks from the three studio albums Kanda recorded for Joe

Boyd’s Hannibal Record label plus earlier recordings making “King of Kwassa Kwassa”

the ultimate Kanda Bongo Man compilation.

The Best Introduction to Soukous & Kanda Bongo Man !!! 9 Jun. 2013

This 2 CD set is an affordable & awesome collection of Kanda Bongo Man's early work with master Soukous guitar player, Diblo Dibala.
Sooo much great Soukous that will keep your spirit dancing to the rhythm's of Congolese Rhumba of these early masters of this incredible
guitar style & dance music.
i would absolutely recommend this as a great place to begin your journey into Soukous or Kanda Bongo Man & Diblo Dibala.
Instead of buying his early CDs, this greatest hits collection delivers over 2 hours of his early & best work in one collection.
Turn this music on & "Forget your troubles & DANCE" !!!

While not all the pieces had the beat I was looking for, overall, this is an excellent compilation of soukous music by an innovative giant.

Some years ago I became a friend to someone from Ethiopia. He introduced this performer to me. I've been so impressed with this style of music that I have purchases other similar recordings; however, the Kanda Bongo Man is one of my favorite. I'm 82 and I pull the shades and dance to this music. A good lift for my age!
