Book Description

10 April 2014 King & Maxwell 6

Former Secret Service Agents turned private investigators, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, return in their most surprising, personal and dangerous case to date.

King and Maxwell encounter teenager Tyler Wingo when he has just received the tragic news that his soldier father has been killed in Afghanistan. But then Tyler receives an email from his father . . . after his supposed death.

Sean and Michelle are hired to solve the mystery, and their investigation leads to deeper, even more troubling questions. Could Tyler's father really still be alive? Was his mission all that it seemed? Has Tyler's life been a lie, and could he be the next target?

It's clear that King and Maxwell have stumbled upon something even more sinister when those in power seem intent on removing them at any cost. Determined to help and protect Tyler, their search for the truth takes them on a perilous journey which not only puts their lives at risk but arrives at a frightening conclusion.

3.0 out of 5 stars JASON STATHAM & ANGELINA JOLIE, ANYONE?? 23 Dec 2013
By Red Rock Bookworm TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Opening with a roadside encounter with a teen-aged boy named Tyler Wingo, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell private investigators and ex- Secret Service agents are drawn into a search for the boy's father who has been declared KIA by the army, but who sent his son a text message after his supposed demise. Suspecting that his father is still alive, Tyler hires King & Maxwell to find the truth. By applying their unique skills and various connections they embark on a dangerous cat and mouse game where an alphabet soup of government agencies appear to be involved and everyone's life is potentially in jeopardy.

There is a lot of action and suspense in this book, whose plot smacks of the Iran Contra scandal of a few years back.....the only people missing in this version are Ronald Reagan and Ollie North. In this particular telling a 20 year army vet named Sam Wingo (father to Tyler), has been chosen to deliver a highly secret cargo to a designated site in Afghanistan. What the cargo is and the identity of the ultimate recipient is not immediately evident. What is evident is that Sam has become the scapegoat as well as a liability in this case of cross and double-cross.

Despite the book's serious topic, there are many amusing moments to be savored - from King and Maxwell's clash over just about everything -- from her garbage-strewn car and his love of wine over beer, to Edgar a savant who takes everything literally and doesn't really understand jokes.

While this is my first encounter with KING AND MAXWELL it is not my first book by David Baldacci (one of my favorites is THE WINNER). While this book is not among my all time favorites I will admit that I did enjoy this excursion into the professional lives and personal baggage of this dynamic duo. 3 1/2 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars a bit "clunky" at times 22 April 2014
By lonbakl
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved the first five books from the series but found this a bit clunky: there is no reason to ask "you've never protected the president, have you?". Even I know the answer - since the sequel started.
Otherwise good and definitely worth the read even though the previous books are better. Not sure I'd buy the next book unless it was reduced.

1.0 out of 5 stars Teen fiction 20 April 2014
By Ray49
Format:Hardcover
Interesting plot would make a two part NCIS tv show or similar but that's it. No depth vague attempts at criticism of US government agencies and foreign policy for the adults and non visceral violence for the teens. Not a Winner.

4.0 out of 5 stars good read 6 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have enjoyed reading the series of books involving these two characters. The book stands as a one off thriller but because there has been earlier books involving these two ex- secret service people you can add an extra level to the enjoyment of the book

Not quite to the standard of the previous K&M books, probably because the format is by now familiar.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not his best 10 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read all od Mr Baldacci's books and this is not his finest hour. This one reads like a book written to a formula and was, frankly rather boring. I expected better.

4.0 out of 5 stars good story line with twists and turns 15 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A good story, but with some rather far-fetched elements. Enjoyable, as most Baldacci books are. Keeps the pages turning throughout.
