Louis Armstrong (trumpet, cornet, vocals) was very active in the 1920s as a sideman and bandleader. Whittling down all the available material to arrive at the 99 tracks on this 4-CD set could not have been an easy matter; producer Joop Visser has excelled himself. The recordings are set out in a logical way and the accompanying 52 page illustrated booklet is a big help in sorting who's who and what's what. The music is consistently interesting - there are no dull moments here - and the remastering is sharp and clear. Having lived with this package for a few weeks, I wouldn't part with it for all the red beans and rice in Louisiana.
