Reviews

Ian Holm stars as the tormented monarch in the Royal National Theatre's production of Shakespeare's tragedy, directed by Richard Eyre. Deciding to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, Lear devises a test to determine their suitability for rule, but before long Lear is swept up in a cruel conspiracy that reveals the depths of treachery to which his daughters Goneril (Barbara Flynn) and Regan (Amanda Redman) will sink in order to achieve power. Only Cordelia (Victoria Hamilton) remains true to her father, but Lear's fatal error only brings further madness and death.

I missed this performance originally at the National long time ago and was so pleased to see it now available on DVD. It is a must for everyone who loves Shakespeare. Ian Holm's- Lear is very moving and also the direction is superb. Have watched it twice since buying this. The subtitles are also useful for those who are studying for English Literature.

A wonderful cast lead by an excellen Ian Holm.
Only a live-performance (National Theater, London) is better!
As good as it gets on DVD.

Format: DVD
An outstanding production of arguably Shakespeare's greatest tragedy. The production strikes a perfect balance between naturalism and symbolism, achieving a depth of emotion rare in film productions of Shakespeare. Ian Holm is magnificence as Lear, bringing humanity and vulnerability to the part. Other performances are uniformly excellent, especially the Fool. The production design is superb, with bold use of colour symbolism. The production gives due weight to all aspects of the play (one never feels that the director is imposing a one-sided interpretation on the text, as with Brook's theatre-of-the-absurd version). Well worth paying a premium for.

Great production of Lear - lots of familiar faces like Amanda Redman. Easy to watch and read text simultaneously if you are buying to study.
